this is how bots army and click fraud take place. your uniq mobile id means nothing. Here is How they build the 3rd gen, 20 mobiles into a server chassis? 3rd generation click farm fraud involves mobile device servers, centralised and operated by one.

@nixCraft As an app dev one of those with boards from different phones would be awesome!

Shame they're used for click farming.

Matthias Mailänder

@nixCraft I first thought they were using the CPUs from recycled phones as a cheap and powerful server to compute stuff.

@MatthiasMailaender @nixCraft @Ryanteck Those boards with tiny adapter cables for multiple vendors to reuse old smartphones for something like cluster servers or development stations would indeed be SO awesome!

Unfortunately that would be a lot of development costs with zero support by smartphone vendors for only little profit, so it most likely won't ever happen… *sigh*

What is a motherboard unit
It's the integration of multiple cell phone motherboards into a single chassis.
Take off the motherboards of the old cell phones you don't need.
Connect the direct cable to the tail plug cable
Hot melt adhesive is applied.
Attach a heat sink
Skillfully install the device in the chassis slot
A motherboard is a cell phone function
This is a set of motherboards equal to 20 cell phones.
Power on the chassis
Connect to the network
One key to boot
Three silent fans
Cool air cooling
Ensure that the performance of the case is not affected
Use the screen casting software to realize screen casting
Throw 20 cell phones HD screen to computer one by one
Each cell phone is a separate IP
Separate environment
Network does not interfere with each other
One button can operate 20 cell phones at the same time
You can also operate one cell phone individually

Web giants playing a thousand different popularity contests make opportunists deciding to optimism an inevitability.

The giants are racketeers making everyone else pay a cost just so they can stay in roughly the same place.

I'm actually okay with this. People who advertise on social media deserve to understand they are throwing money in the wind.. but they won't LOL

Gabriel Adrian Samfira

@avlcharlie @nixCraft these are also used to spread massive amounts of disinformation and as a tool to mass report accounts that go against a certain narrative. That way they can influence elections, create public outrage and hysteria, amplify conspiracy theories of the dumbest sort and create noise to drown out reason and facts.

@gabriel @nixCraft
Good point. Also a sad statement on gullibility I suppose..

@avlcharlie @nixCraft crowd psychology is a different beast. "A person is smart. People are dumb." To quote Tommy Lee Jones from Men In Black

Question is: would the "political branch" work without the economic branch? Just the pure scale of the economic part makes this comparatively cheap. If advertisers wouldn't push billions into this industry, the costs for government actors would be much higher.

@nixCraft

Imagine smartphones having proper Linux available being normal, so we could actually reuse them as a super cheap but powerful Raspberry Pi replacement.

Viacheslav A.

@nixCraft They don't seem to use any sim-cards, so they don't need IMSI or ICCID, I guess. Why would they need actual mobile motherboards and all this tinkering then, couldn't they get by with several emulators working in parallel?

maybenot

@via4 @nixCraft
google's wivedine? or some other 'trusted device' thing?

Viacheslav A.

@maybenot @nixCraft I guess you're right.
Out of sheer interest I tested creation of google and instagram accounts on a clean android device, and both were successful without even providing a phone number. Same trick didn't play out through a regular desktop browser. So there is indeed difference, but the question stays, can an emulator be configured to mimic the actual device close enough?
Unfortunately, I don't have any android emulators available here, so cannot do a proper test just yet

Gorobar

@via4 @maybenot @nixCraft I've asked myself the same question - would have thought a virtualized/emulated environment was the way to go something like that
(also: why can one avoid detection with this hardware array and not with a simulation?)
I'm not a specialist anyway, but this is interesting...

I can't even get Chromecast to work reliably.

Bryan

@RealGene @nixCraft ig, fb etc must know these are part of the game?

nixCraft 🐧

@BryanLastRedDrop @RealGene @nixCraft they know but it also helps them sell more advertising on their platform. Money is involved. They have zero desire to fix it.

RealGene ☣️

@BryanLastRedDrop @nixCraft
Yes, of course they do, but it increases "engagement", and artificially boosts user numbers and ad clicks, which they use to show to the rubes/advertisers that ads work.

Andreas

@nixCraft I'm curious on how they got the phone working headless like that, what did they do to do that?

Log 🪵

@nixCraft And they can part out the rest of the phones as repair replacements. Or sell them right back to the factory, if they have a guy that knows a guy.

pitch R.

@nixCraft so you are saying the tracking of our each and every move in order to provide "trust" is not actually helping against spam? i am shocked... NOT!

Thanks for showing 😉

@nixCraft human species at the peak of their intellect. Such a waste

Sam Utopian

@nixCraft I don’t understand the advantage of doing this instead of generating 20 virtual phone instances… if that is even possible 😅

webhat

@nixCraft this would be great for parallelizing automated smoke tests of apps

@nixCraft It's a Matrix pod, only it's unscrupulous and manipulative humans mercilessly exploiting innocent cellphones who think they're living on a real network. :blobcatsad:
