@nixCraft They don't seem to use any sim-cards, so they don't need IMSI or ICCID, I guess. Why would they need actual mobile motherboards and all this tinkering then, couldn't they get by with several emulators working in parallel?

Out of sheer interest I tested creation of google and instagram accounts on a clean android device, and both were successful without even providing a phone number. Same trick didn't play out through a regular desktop browser. So there is indeed difference, but the question stays, can an emulator be configured to mimic the actual device close enough?
Unfortunately, I don't have any android emulators available here, so cannot do a proper test just yet

@via4 @maybenot @nixCraft I've asked myself the same question - would have thought a virtualized/emulated environment was the way to go something like that
(also: why can one avoid detection with this hardware array and not with a simulation?)
I'm not a specialist anyway, but this is interesting...
