made some more tongue-in-cheek ha-ha no-seriously images to help you manage replies in lieu of affordances to help you manage replies please steal and use if you find useful or so help me funny

1. Do not reply unless you have direct experience
2. Do not reply with a software suggestion
3. This is an observation. Do not attempt to help. No reply necessary.

YOU MAY REPLY if you have a suggestion or request for another helpful informational message.

@danhon
@GottaLaff ⬆️ I’m sure you could adapt this idea? πŸ§πŸ˜‚

Eric Meyer

@danhon Maybe a DO NOT REPLY TO DENY MY LIVED EXPERIENCE would be useful?

Dan Hon

4. Do not reply to deny my lived experience (h/t @Meyerweb)

Thomas πŸ”βœ¨

@danhon @Meyerweb I love how the German is always awkward and wants an extra line

Eric Meyer

@thomasfuchs @danhon Especially given how that description seems much more quintessentially British!

Dan Hon

Started putting these in a Flickr album:

flickr.com/photos/danhon/album

DO NOT REPLY WITH A SUGGESTION FOR ME TO UPLOAD THEM SOMEWHERE FOSS

Andrew Feeney

@danhon You should print these out and put them in a photo album.

#MaliciousCompliance

Luis Villa

@danhon (switching immediately to the first client that offers these as a macro with proper alt-text)

Ryan Bateman :blobpats:

@danhon "Do not reply to tell me the problem is capitalism."
I... I know.
I know.
I. Know.

Richard Hendricks

@danhon How open "OPEN THIS POST ON MY INSTANCE TO SEE ALL REPLIES BEFORE ADDING YOURS"?

Dan Hon

6. Do not reply to teach me about capitalism or enshittification. I know.

Dan Hon

7. Do not reply to tell me you don't have this problem

Dan Hon

Most of these are more specific versions of the β€œThis is an observation / do not attempt to help / no reply necessary" first, general one, it seems.

a spooky jazz dad..

@danhon i think it's fine to spell it out for people who may not get it.

Dan Hon

it would be more efficient to have reply-sticker-generator dot org

but i'm sure i have, like, actual work to do

blaine

@danhon similar to "you don't have this problem" but possibly useful would be "DO NOT REPLY TO TELL ME TO RTFM [WITHOUT INCLUDING A SPECIFIC, RELEVANT, AND HELPFUL CITATION]"

Andrew Feeney

@danhon Huh, this never happens to me. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

keithzg

@danhon Of course not, you should use Free Softw

hnapel

@danhon

Do not reply with off-topic comments.

Chris is.

@danhon If you hadn't already beaten me to it, I was going to suggest "Don't reply to tell me to use open source software”

Honestly, I could do without the whole field of β€œwell, I hate the software you're using" replies.

(Brilliant stuff, thanks for these!)

Chris is.

@danhon Mostly I wish I could save these images with built-in alt text so that I don't have to re-describe them every time I use one :D

Dan Hon

@offby1 I added that one about 10 minutes ago :)

Esther is studying

@danhon is it ok if I put these on a little cookie-less website with ready-to-copy alt text?

Mommy Citron

@danhon

ooh :neocat_surprised:
this is very nice, thank you! :blackheartsparkle:

maybit

@danhon @Meyerweb
Grammar: you missed the accord of the adjective: "Ne pas rΓ©pondre pour nier mon expΓ©rience vΓ©cu**e**"
Improvement suggestion:
"Ne pas rΓ©pondre si c'est pour nier mon expΓ©rience vΓ©cue"

Great one that said ❀️ - I hope it will be of help to some 🌈 πŸ–€

Dan Hon

@fraying there's another possibly good one next in the thread

Derek Powazek 🐐

@danhon I saw! Looking forward to the whole inevitable crayola box.

Florian Haas

@danhon This is the epitomous "don't make me tap the sign" post. Glorious. Thank you!

Mark Eichin

@danhon
"This is not a place of honor" vibes from the third one :)

Thierna

@danhon I love that these are in more than one language!

Simon Green

@danhon DO NOT REPLY to tell me why adblockers are bad?

Parsingphase

@danhon THIS IS NOT A POST OF HONOR
NO GREAT QUESTIONS ARE ASKED HERE
etc

Kevin Boyd

@danhon ... how about one for the Long-term nuclear waste warning message?

Dan Hon

@kboyd I mean I always have time for the long-term nuclear waste message

Just Boby

@danhon This is brilliant, public service. πŸ‘ŒπŸΌπŸ‘ŒπŸΌπŸ‘ŒπŸΌ

Shannon Clark

@danhon perhaps a Do Not Reply this was an attempt at humor (or sarcasm)

Aaron

@danhon so good. Collectively these feel like a great (part of a) code of conduct or values statement for someone's mastodon instance ... ? "By tearing open this shrink wrap you agree to the following"

tiz

@danhon these are so good and german as the first alternate language is *chef's kiss*

Torsten Torsten

@danhon What about adding threatened sanctions? "Do not ... or I will ..." to make the fediverse a really friendly place.

Sumana Harihareswara

@danhon Thank you for these!

How about:

Do not boost (or: only boost if you will also police your followers in the replies)

Do not snitch (as in: if I have deliberately avoided using a particular string here to avoid hostile searches, don't betray me)

Do not repeat (go to the trouble of reading existing replies before posting yours)

Max L.

@brainwane @danhon
Serious question: How do you "police your followers"? As far as I'm aware of only the instance admins/mods can do any moderation action?

Sumana Harihareswara

@max

"Police" here is perhaps the wrong word! One could:

* argue with the follower if they say something rude
* embarrass the rude follower by saying something like "Sorry, original poster, I regret my follower's behavior here"
* have a chat with the rude follower to say "what led you to do that? don't you have manners?"
* block them

@danhon

Max L.

@brainwane @danhon
Ah, I see. Unfortunately I doubt that helps in most cases :S Also does blocking actually prevent them from interacting with your boosted posts?

Sumana Harihareswara

@max

I figure, if I block someone, that reduces how often I will be the conduit through which they see posts I make or boost, and thus reduce how often I will be a contributing factor to them being rude to me or someone I'm boosting.

@danhon

Β‘feduardo!
@danhon Do not suggest AI/Blockchain/RegEx to solve this problem.
Emma Builds πŸš€

@danhon "Do not reply to tell me 'but that's how the internet works'."

ginoputrino

@danhon These are great. My suggestion:

Do not reply if you can't imagine why I need to do this.

I hate comments suggesting I do a completely different thing because the commenter can't imagine why what I want to do would ever be necessary.

Jason Lefkowitz

@danhon 🎡 Did you ever know that you’re my hero 🎡

Tursiae

@danhon Might I suggest an opposing message to round out the collection?

"DO NOT REPLY WITH SERIOUS SUGGESTIONS."

This is a shitpost. Please add to this with your own original humour and/or light-hearted commiserations.

Nopon Sage πŸŒ€

@danhon β€œDO NOT REPLY UNLESS YOU HAVE DIRECT EXPERIENCE” - Oh wow, my inner monologue has been screaming this one at work for the last couple of weeks

(I know it’s not the intended target of that image, but so many β€œhave never touched a keyboard to code” people suggesting we build features the most asinine way has wore me out lately)

Γ¦ndra

@danhon These are absolutely incredible πŸ™Œ

Love the Do Not Reply To Tell Me To Use Open Source Software one especially

Dan Hon

@aendra actually quite surprised I haven't been burnt at the stake for that one

Dan Hon

@aendra in fairness I have briefly considered whether I should also do DON'T REPLY TO TELL ME TO JUST USE APPLE STUFF

Γ¦ndra

@danhon I have never once been told to just use Apple stuff tho... πŸ€”

Craig Maloney β˜•

@danhon Suggestion: Do not reply to tell me that the cloud is someone else's computer.

Anna

@danhon brilliant! Saved from all annoyances except the people who will reply just that but, you know, *ironically*

Megan Lynch (she/her)

@uxmark Hahaha, I'm both annoyed by folks who do that and also possibly guilty of doing it to others.😳

Mark Connolly 🍻 πŸš΄πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ (he, him, his)

@glightly And as threads get longer and β€œtangentially related” suggestions accumulate, it’s like a warped game of telephone πŸ˜€

sidereal

@danhon DO NOT REPLY WITH A JOKE OTHER PEOPLE HAVE ALREADY MADE

Tindra

@danhon this would be an excellent use case for being able to save the alt text with the image so I don’t have to enter it every freaking time.

Rama

@danhon
French for the blue one, in case you would like it (and I do realise the paradoxical nature of my own message but there we are):
- Ceci est une observation
- N'offrez pas d'aide
- Inutile de rΓ©pondre

Morgan

@danhon idk how exactly to phrase it but I'd probably use one to say something along the lines of "just because I am interacting with my moots and I have light skin does NOT mean it's appropriate to respond with the whitest message I have ever seen" bc racists seem to take my avatar as an indication that I'll agree with them 😐

Mike Taylor πŸ¦•

@danhon I wonder if Mastodon could easily implement an Only Allow Replies From People I Follow checkbox. (Yes: a software suggestion.)

bds

@danhon
LOL just gonna bookmark this for later... 🀣

Bela Lugosi's Dad

@danhon "I've already Googled it myself" would cover a lot of stuff

calcifer :nes_fire:

@danhon this is amazing. It reminds me a little bit of TLP levels (ARG -- Anti-Reply-Guy -- levels?)

Mark Gardner

@danhon Very nice!

However, the Flickr images are all @creativecommons licensed CC BY-NC-SA 2.0 (creativecommons.org/licenses/b). Complying with that license is a bit more involved than the album description’s β€œFeel free to steal etc.”

For example, because there’s no attribution in the images themselves I’d have to remember to add your name every time I reply with one of your images.

May I suggest a CC0 public domain license (creativecommons.org/publicdoma)?

Byron :computerfairies:

@danhon missing 'do not reply unless your direct experience matches my scenario.' I've long been inoculated against this due to a general lack of patience + inattentive ADD, but sometimes this would be easier

Another might be 'do not reply with chatGPT/AI prompt output'

Osma Suominen

@danhon
How about DO NOT REPLY WITH AN OBLIGATORY XKCD

Doctor Popular

@danhon these are wonderful. I love the art and design. Thanks for sharing them.

copperred

@danhon I think we all know why German is the second line. IYKYK

Absolutely love these!

Marino :pebble:

@danhon Damn, I feel bad replying as I feel I'm falling into one of these situations that need another image (sort of no need to reply for typos, just keep the idea).
But as you said we may reply, there it goes: You have an extra "S" in spanish "Necesario" (last sentence in the blue image).

Btw, I'm stealing them 😁

Phillip Upton

@danhon

I think this is an excellent idea.

I also think that the white space between the languages is better than not having it.

yanncphoto

@danhon
Can I suggest either of those :
- a sign : I don’t need you to fix my typos
- a typo to be fixed somewhere

πŸ˜„

mavica is back :transbian2:

@danhon "do not reply unless you have read all the replies on the original instance to see if someone already said what you were going to say" seems to be a common problem with activitypub-microblogging

witch hat hacker πŸŽƒ types ver

@danhon i'm often in need of a unilateral "germans DNI" sign tbh

but maybe that would be too on the nose,

jsled

@danhon πŸ§‘β€πŸ³ πŸ˜— amazing.

Brendan Jones

@danhon I could sometimes use a DO NOT REPLY WITH OBTUSE SARCASM IF I DO NOT KNOW YOU

Oni

@danhon these seem like different version of getting unsolicited advice from someone else :thinking_ai:

Franciscus :verified:

@danhon

I would make it simpler and shorter, as many people are not posting on their mother tongue. Something like

DO NOT REPLY

..

django

@danhon you struck a chord with deep harmonics.

Seriously, someone needs to make these into masto compatible emoji

Tom Walker

@danhon "Do not reply to tell me to use the word Fediverse"

πŸŽ“ Dr. Freemo :jpf: πŸ‡³πŸ‡±

@danhon Actually I love this.. while the default should always be for people to be welcome to rely and disagree.. some people may specifically not want that, and I do agree it should be assumed open and welcoming unless explicitly stated otherwise. So these seem like a good way to do that.

hexaheximal

@danhon The more I read this thread the more toxic this gets. Definitely going to block you.

tnypxl

@danhon I wish Mastodon supported per-post reply settings. Then we wouldn't need to use these overt strategies.
