@feditips @bookwyrm #BookWyrm interactions from Mastodon (gleaned passively)β¦ -Book url isn't searchable, so can't add a review below. -Can boost existing reviews: but just the cover, stars & heading; no body text. -Presumably replies to reviews work? I can't see replies on BW sites (not logged in), only an icon to add one. Even if I click a review's date to view in isolation. -Can follow users: feed of cover art (started, finished, rated) clutter. Plus comments & quotes, w/ text.
Fedi.Tips π
If you're posting a poll through a Mastodon server's website interface, you can switch between "one answer allowed" and "multiple answers allowed" by clicking the circles next to the answers. When clicked they turn into squares, when clicked again they turn back into circles. β« Circles mean only one answer is allowed, and is the default. βΌοΈ Squares mean multiple answers are allowed. (Apps will have their own interface for switching between these options.)

@feditips sadly, very few people younger than me know why the "one choice" is called a "radio button"...

@feditips hashtags too, no longer need to exist. ;-). Not that my desire for hashtags to die off will ever come to fruition. We add alt data for images. We might as well add a field for keywords, instead of hashtags. This is a personal desire. People feel that hashtags are cool, so it's hopeless for my desire to come to fruition. ;-)

@feditips I finally figured out how to do this with zero coding experience and skills and felt like a bona fide ninja.

@feditips Is there a way to change visibility after the fact? I havenβt been able to edit past posts in this one respect.

@feditips ... if the king of your instance doesn't decide to block half of the network that is. Be aware, that you're always a puppet of your instance admins ideology. The only way out of this is to stay on a single user instance. There are services out there offering this, like masto.host (not affiliated in any way).

@feditips I see! So when replying to folks, it's best to use unlisted. I was wondering what this was for. Thanks for the tips lol this is a genuinely helpful account.
Fedi.Tips π
Did you know that each Mastodon server has its own custom emoji? Each server admin can upload images :cate: or animations :rickroll: which are available to anyone on that server. Ask your admin if you want a particular emoji added to your server. To access them on an app, click the app's own emoji button (usually a smiley π ). For normal emoji, click the picker on your phone's keyboard. To access them on the web, click the emoji picker in the post writing box (which looks like this π ).

@feditips this site by @santisbon is a really neat and useful tool for looking at #emojos on your own or remote server all in one place with the name!

@feditips Following hashtags is a great way to find content that interests new users! Thanks π
Fedi.Tips π
You don't need to use the official Mastodon apps, they're not the best way to use Mastodon. The official apps only arrived last year, and they were intended as "Fisher Price My First Mastodon" things with a restricted set of features. Third party apps have been around longer than official ones, and include way more features. You can sign in with the same account on all apps. :android: On Android try Tusky, Fedilab, Megalodon, Tooot :apple_inc: On iPhone/iPad, try Toot!, Ice Cubes, Ivory, Mona

@feditips People are idiots, they do not like choice, they prefer to be told what to do, and they require the simplest of UI as humanly possible. Without the need to learn a Foreign Language, which is any set of words not associated with the most basics of their every day language.
It would behove the Fediverse to acknowlegde this fact and work towards a singular vehicle and UI. The same issue is going on in Linux. Too much choices.

@feditips thanks! Iβm going to give these a try. Iβve been using Metatext and itβs definitely rough around the edges.
Fedi.Tips π
You don't have to use Mastodon through an app! Every server has its own website where you can log in and use all its features. The web interface is excellent, and it usually gets the latest features before the apps do. Your server's website address will usually be the same as its name, for example the website for the server kind.social is at https://kind.social The website works on both computers and phones. (If you're using the phone version, click # to see the search box.)

@feditips The truth is I think people get too carried away with apps, and they do cause a lot of problems.

@feditips I was just wondering less than 10 minutes ago what the difference between mute and block was. I chose to mute an account which seemed to do the job, but now I know exactly what it does and it was the exact choice I hoped for. Thanks for posting this!

The free open source forum software NodeBB is now working on official Fediverse support. Federation isn't ready yet, but if this interests you, you might want to follow their account: β‘οΈ @nodebb Their official website is at https://nodebb.org and the co-founder of NodeBB is at @devnull
Fedi.Tips π
Just a follow-up, the audiobook version of "Mastodon for Dummies" is out now on major audiobook platforms.

@feditips well I somewhat disagree. You lose control of all the binaries that you uploaded with the account you're leaving. So putting it in an archive is not a bad idea. But this is an addition too. What you need to do to move not instead of

@feditips Let's say I've successfully migrated, and leave the old account redirecting for several days/weeks. What happen if I log into the old account and I click `cancel` migration? Can do that to repurpose my old account for something else and leave the follower/ing data on the new account?
Fedi.Tips π
#Kbin update: - The https://kbin.social server is now federating with the Fediverse. You can follow/interact with kbin.social magazines & users from other Kbin servers, Mastodon & rest of the Fediverse. For example the TIL magazine is at @TodayILearned, the lead dev of Kbin is at @ernest - There's a new Kbin server at https://readit.buzz which is run by the same people as the Universodon.com Mastodon server. It's open for signups, just click "log in" and then "register".

If you want to support the lead developer of Kbin (the Fediverse Reddit alternative), they have a donation link at: β‘οΈ https://www.buymeacoffee.com/kbin None of the platforms on the Fedi are corporate. All of them rely on donations. |
