There are lots of ways you can use #RSS on the Fediverse: -Follow any Mastodon account's public posts through RSS by putting .rss at the end of their profile URL. Use this address in your feed reader software. -Follow any PeerTube account or channel by clicking the options menu next to the Subscribe button and selecting RSS. -If you are on a Friendica server, you can use it as a feed reader. Paste an RSS feed address in the search box, that feed's posts will appear in your home timeline. p.s. If you're wondering what the heck RSS is, there are a couple of excellent videos about it on the Fediverse: "Stop using social media for news, RSS is much better" by @thelinuxexperiment https://tilvids.com/w/mgJ2R4gfQ3XqZPZFHtWDPE "Newsboat RSS reader: fight the algorithm from the terminal!" by @veronicaexplains If you're wondering why some people have much larger character limits, the explanation will be one of these: -They are on a Mastodon server where the admin has tweaked the code to allow higher limits (this is a bit tricky, vanilla Mastodon doesn't officially support this) -They are on a fork of Mastodon such as Glitch or Hometown, which support adjustable character limits -They are on a non-Mastodon Fediverse server such as Friendica or Calckey or WordPress which support much higher limits

@feditips I use GoToSocial. Almost entirely compatible with almost all mastodon clients, much more lightweight, and allows customization of things like that. Mines set to 5000 right now (I believe thatβs the default π³) If there's the same conversation shown on different kinds of Fediverse server, each server type will display it in its own format. For example: In the attached images, you can see a conversation thread in the replies to a PeerTube video post. On Mastodon it will look like a Masto thread, but on PeerTube it will look like comments below the video. They are both the same thread! It's just displayed differently depending on which kind of server you're looking at it from. p.s. To comment on a PeerTube video from Mastodon, just reply to that video's post. It will be shown as a comment in PeerTube. To like a PeerTube video from Mastodon, just favourite its video post within Mastodon. It will be shown as a thumbs up on PeerTube. To subscribe to a PeerTube video channel, just follow its account in Mastodon. They are the same things being displayed differently depending on where you're looking at them from. Two tips: - You can use many apps at once with the same account. Just install additional apps and sign in on them too. (Bear in mind though if you have notifications switched on for all of them, they will all notify for the same thing.) - You can use many accounts at once with the same app. The official Mastodon app and some third party apps let you add or switch accounts by holding down the icon in the bottom right corner. Some apps will have a different interface. @feditips I have a thin nonbrowser client, I keep thinking I sould take a crack at building a simple fedi server, what's the smallest cleanest example of how to use the apis? I'm fairly language agnostic. Are there apis? is there a how to link? no big deal either way, but might be fun A lot of the accounts you follow and interact with on here are not Mastodon accounts! For example, @theatticdwellers is a PeerTube account, @Iancylkowski is a Pixelfed account, @rstv is an OwnCast account. There are dozens of different server types on here, not just Mastodon servers. When you talk about this place, it's not enough to call it "Mastodon", because it's more than just that. That's why people call this place "The Fediverse", because that name covers all server types. :fediverse:

@feditips Is there a way you can tell? The only clue I've had so far is if a post is waaaay longer than the average toot. @feditips @theatticdwellers @Iancylkowski @rstv Sadly, neither PeerTube nor Pixelfed has an official mobile app that you can find on your phone's store. Are you still using the official Mastodon app? You don't have to! There are loads of brilliant third party apps which work with your existing Mastodon account. Unlike Twitter, Facebook etc, Mastodon uses open standards, which means third party apps can do everything the official apps do and more. There are links to third party apps on the official Mastodon site, just scroll down past the official ones: β‘οΈ https://joinmastodon.org/apps Click on Android, iOS etc to narrow down the app selection.

@feditips ...only when you show up in the loop, otherwise do not know or where to find you...not in face to be seen @feditips: My Fediverse clients are Tusky (for Android) and Hyperspace (for Linux). I find they organize better for me than the web interface, even if there are features less well supported. @feditips@mstdn.social calckey server website but I can't wait for the official app release or Mastodon API implementation so I can use Mastodon clients... I'm tired of its buggy frontend on my cringe slow phone Did you know you can use an animated GIF as your profile picture or profile header? As long as it's under 2 megabytes you can upload it just like any other profile image. GIFs may or may not play automatically for you, depending on your settings. You can set this by logging in through your server's website and going to Settings > Auto-play Animated GIFs β οΈ Do not use rapidly flashing GIFs as these can be dangerous for people with certain neurological conditions such as photosensitive epilepsy.

p.s. If you want to see the about page of a server's mobile website, click on the β― button on the right of the screen. If you're looking at the desktop website it will be a button labelled "Learn more" on the left of the screen. Both of these take you to the server's About page, which has a description of the server, its rules, a list of blocked servers and the public contact email of the server's admin.

@feditips As I am currently running my own little instance as of just a few days ago, this is timely advice!! @feditips These tips are so great! Thank you, and please keep them coming. ππβΊοΈ > Ask your admin to subscribe to relays Iβm YET to come across a relay that does not break one server or the other serverβs rules - furry porn, Japanese manga (the shitty ones) and the like. What is the Fediverse? What does federation mean? π When you call a phone number, your phone provider will connect to other providers in order to put your call through. You're part of the worldwide phone network: hundreds of independent phone providers talking to each other. :fediverse: When you publish a post on here, your server will connect to other servers to distribute your post. You're part of the worldwide Fediverse: thousands of independent social media servers talking to each other.

@feditips I thank ALL VOLUNTEERS who maintain servers! β₯οΈπ And moderators of content. As you might know, it's the Eurovision Song Contest final this weekend. However, did you know there is also a FediVision Song Contest, right here on the Fediverse? :fediverse: FediVision is an annual festival of music where people from across the Fediverse submit songs and vote on a winner. There will be more details of the 2023 contest soon, follow the official bot to keep up to date: β‘οΈ @fedivision There's also a website at: β‘οΈ https://fedivision.party Hey server admins! Do you run a small server and you wish it had a wider view of the Fediverse, with more results from searches? You might want to try using relays: β‘οΈ https://fedi.tips/using-relays-to-quickly-expand-a-servers-view-of-the-fediverse/ If general relays take up too many resources, try using a more specific topic or instance relay feed from FediBuzz: β‘οΈ https://relay.fedi.buzz

@feditips wow this is a great time! Going to follow the #NewJersey tag for our local instance and see how it goes! The long-running Fediverse group service Guppe will shut down on 31st May 2023 if it doesn't receive enough funding to cover its costs: https://web.immers.space/2023/05/farewell-to-guppe/ If you want to support Guppe and prevent it shutting down, you can send donations through its OpenCollective at:

The future of Guppe was largely decided with support for Groups expected in an upcoming Mastodon release. Fediverse servers tend to have a lot more human moderators than centralised commercial social networks. Here's why: Staff ratio means the number of human moderators per user. A typical Fediverse server has about 500-1000 members. Let's assume an average staff ratio of 1:1000. Facebook has 3 billion members, so in order to get a staff ratio of 1:1000 it would need 3 million moderators. The current total number of employees of *any kind* at Facebook/Meta is only 77,114.

@feditips I remember reading that Facebook was farming out content moderation to offices in the Phillipines, and that some of the stuff they had to look at was so sick and dark that employee turnover was brisk due to the consequences to mental health of the moderators. Calckey is a Fediverse server type which includes lots of features that Mastodon doesn't yet have, such as emoji reactions, markdown, customisable interfaces, widgets and lots more. To see for yourself, have a look on the official website at: β‘οΈ https://calckey.org For the latest updates, follow the official account at: β‘οΈ @calckey If you want to try signing up, there's a stable server at: β‘οΈ https://calckey.social

@feditips I appreciate the time and effort you put into keeping us up to date on this stuff. You make it easy to check things out and understand what they are meant to do. Thank you!!!! |
@feditips Lemmy is the better option. I've been using it for a bit and it's way more engaged. And because it's the fediverse, if you aren't so sure about the content of an instance, there are a couple others to choose from. I'm also sure there are moderation issues with the influx of new users. I haven't seen any outwardly offensive/anti human rights content at all.
@feditips Is Reddit just Twitter now?
@feditips have they not learned the Streisand effect exists?
