Some really good changes coming for default apps on iOS in the EU. My realization in 2024 has been that the DMA fork of iOS is the best iPhone experience. We can finally use our phones like actual computers with more default apps and apps from external sources. We were not crazy. We were right. Amazing work by our @robb corroborated by extensive analysis at Wired: Perplexity Is a Bullshit Machine https://www.wired.com/story/perplexity-is-a-bullshit-machine/ Regulation in this space cannot come soon enough. AI companies that want to scrape the web for training purposes, or use their bots to summarize webpages, should follow a strict set of guidelines with identifiable user-agents and IP addresses. Publishers should have a right to opt out of any AI access, request details as to whether their copyrighted content is included in any model, and if so, request that its gets removed and the model re-trained. Hopefully the EU's AI Act will help. sometimes I think about all the international drama we could have avoided if only Apple said "let's make iPhones work like Macs for installing apps"

@viticci It astounds me that Apple has been able to hold on to veto power over developers for so long. And that it translates into veto power over the capabilities of end users. I remember having antitrust discussions all the way back when the AppStore launched. We knew this would happen.  @viticci agreed. The blocker to this would be a small group of AppStore executives who care about their million dollar bonuses more than apps or customers. Incentives are greed based ๐ค whatever new Siri AI Apple is working on, I sure hope it doesn't bring up 'Mussolini' literally every single time I search for a 'music' app on my phone

No, Apple still has to approve thrid party app stores and is still standing there between developer and user.
There is also iOS standing in the way. Computers are not a certan set of features, they are universal, having ALL the features. To be a computer for the user you need to let it run any program, directly on the processor, not API layer of iOS.
@viticci yep, but for people that are not that skilled it is confusing. My mom called me the other day, which browser she should use that her phone is asking her...๐คฆ๐ปโโ๏ธ of course I recommend Safari, because other browsers sucks on iOS. But she wasn't sure.
