Today is poker night on the @yogscast #JingleJam, the December charity fundraiser event. It starts in about an hour. One of the streams I'm always looking forward to π Itβs hard not to say βAIβ when everybody else does too, but technically calling it AI is buying into the marketing. There is no intelligence there, and itβs not going to become sentient. Itβs just statistics, and the danger they pose is primarily through the false sense of skill or fitness for purpose that people ascribe to them.

@Gargron how our brain works it is also statistics in a way, but yes biological beings are still at the order of magnitude more complex than some 2023 super computer.  @Gargron I thought I joined mastodon to find tech and news content. I was wrong. I am here exclusively for #catsofmastodon I've been brewing on this thought for a while, but I think it comes down to, AI has no place in the arts. Machine-generated art has the appearance of what it is emulating, but no substance. Like cake made entirely of fondant. Or cardboard.

 @Gargron while I think the current AI wave is >95% BS, I can imagine use of AI in art. Along the lines of Duchamp's ready mades, surrealism's approaches to art by using odd processes, and Bill Burrough's cut up method. Those are all ways of using tools to pervert automation and create mind bending art. To do it well would require true genius. About to watch the @hatfilms game show on the @yogscast #JingleJam. I actually don't know what to expect but I remember it was fun last year. First roll of 120 that I shot with the Pentax 6x7 came back from the lab and unfortunately they're all blurry. Hubris. I thought I could do it handheld. Should've tried a tripod at least for one shot.

@Gargron Since the Pentax 6x7 offers exposure times of up to 1/1000s, hand-held shots should be quite possible - provided it is bright enough. Films with ISO 400 are recommended - which can also be used at 800 ISO with push development. I prefer to use slide films with my Zenza Bronica S2a 6x6 camera, despite the fact that they are more critical when exposing. And you?  Hi, unrelated thought. Not sure who to suggest this to. It is really hard to distinguish when you boost something. The grey to purple change is really subtle so I end up boosting and unboosting to make sure that I boosted. I think it is especially hard for those with some vision degradation. Just a suggestion to whoever. Thx! Thereβs our baubles on the tree and #JingleJam in the background. Tree still looks a bit empty but we now have two cats so Iβm hesitant to put the glass ones on for now.

 @Gargron Can highly recommend white βsilkβ flowers. Looks fantastic with white lights and a few ornaments. @Gargron Speaking as the mum of two young cats, who has to gather the (plastic) ornaments from the floor every morning while the tree is up, that is the correct choice! even if you didnβt care about the ornaments per se, broken ornaments are v dangerous for cat beans. Β£1.6M raised for charity so far! We finally put up the Christmas tree!
