I've got a good feeling about this bank of mysterious fog moving against the wind to blanket our isolated small town. People say "you can't put the genie back in the bottle", but the bottle is where the genie lives, they go back in their bottles all the time. Toontown in WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT is probably cinema's most successful representation of cosmic horror. Judge Doom is a Nyarlathotep type, a visitor from a psychotic land who is not human but can appear as such and is a harbinger of hell on Earth (ie car culture). So Elon Musk's petty suspending of his competitor's Twitter account led to the creation of #JohnMastodon, a typo-based personification of that competitor, an instantly beloved mascot for the service he's trying to throttle. It's like if Sideshow Bob paid $44 billion to keep stepping on those rakes. If Mastodon had attempted to create a fictional founder called John Mastodon, everyone would've thought that was stupid as hell. But this? This is golden. You can't buy PR like this, it has to happen organically. |
