@256 I suspect @dangillmor maintains this position some 24 years later. It’s not like the industry has changed in that respect.

@256 oh no, this reminded me of ye olde jokes from the Win9x era, "Windows has detected that you have moved your mouse. Please restart your computer."
Gorgeous na Shock!

@256 Remember when every trip into network properties required a reboot? 😌

@256 seeing 20 year old IRC screenshots makes you wonder how many of those people are still around

Wubi (2008-2012) - a tool that installs Ubuntu from inside Windows

@256 The only software I know of that lets me boot into a Linux on my Toshiba Windows Tablet since its own bootloader is limited to booting into Windows. As far as I can tell, it doesn't let me choose where to boot from, so Wubi helps with that

@256
Wubi is what freed me! Changing OS is always a step into the unknown. Wubi made it easy to peek behind the curtain.

It's important to realise how big a barrier there is. Users are very familiar with installing programs. So installing Wubi was much the same. Something easy to try out ,with no commitment.

@256 As a computer science professor, I have to say, even after all these years, this is still the best explanation of how computers work!

@256 I'm biased but I always eye-rolled at most of their ads (disclosure: I had a personally incendiary loathing for PC management for a litany of reasons, both personal and professional) but found jabbing at MSFT always worth a chuckle.

Penguin

@256 @tchambers I approve of your choice of spirit animal, though Apple’s many OS’s are fine for me 🙂

@256 I worked for Microsoft running the helpdesk leading up to and during the Windows 95 launch. It was an incredible time. I had a blast, and the tech was FUN. It was SO different from what they'd done before. I miss the innocence of those days.
