We got lots of spam at MetaFilter and one time someone posted trying to promote something called "Exemplary Purchase" and we kept wondering what are they were trying to say until we realized it was a translation error, they meant to say "Best Buy" in English.

Ten years on, every time I drive past a BestBuy, I think "Exemplary Purchase!"

@mathowie My dad always calls Best Buy "Least objectionable purchase"

phanpy.social is a pretty incredible Mastodon client. Entirely web based, looks great on mobile and desktop, you can configure your shortcuts that appear above or below the river of news.

Some screenshots from my own account: good notifications page, different kinds of toots get a different status, plus Boosts are shown in their own carousel.

I've heard one developer made all this, it's pretty incredible.

Boosts are rolled up into a carousel of toots you can view with sideways scrolling
Threads are shown grouped together and single posts from threads are indicated as such.

@mathowie The one feature that keeps me using Mona for iOS is putting photo captions into the Alt Text field so I don't have to copy and paste manually. But otherwise phanpy.social is the web app I can use anywhere, even in VR.

@mathowie trying it out now. This is really nice! Thanks for sharing.

Lawyer: my client should be able to Fuck Around, forever.

Lefty SC justice: What about the Finding Out step that always follows?

Lawyer: We eliminate it. It never happens ever again, but just for the office of President. Everyone else continues to Find Out.

1. Biden does not contest the case.

2. Trump wins the “principle” of absolute presidential immunity.

3. Biden shoots Trump.

Problem solved.

@mathowie how do these judges show their face in public!? Oh maybe they don't, only step out for exclusive vacations. If their fav candidate becomes president, their opinion will not be needed anymore anyway

That's the originalist recipe for jurisprudence.

if I was cast in the film The Social Network, I'd walk onto set each morning, do some finger guns at the director and ask him "So, are we sorkin' hard today or hardly sorkin'?"

the funniest thing about Apple is the last version of MacOS features "video reactions" where if your camera sees you do a thumbs up or heart symbol with your hands, stuff happens behind you like fireworks in ANY video app you are using BY DEFAULT.

A friend was in an online therapy session, describing his trauma so the therapist asked if he was alright and he did a thumbs up and then HUGE FIREWORKS BEHIND HIS HEAD.

It's so bad that online therapy sessions now start with a warning dialog!

@mathowie Apple never learn - reminds of when (pre-Intel) Macs first had system-wide voice recognition enabled by default and if you learned the correct intonation for the default voice you could reboot anyone else's Mac (without saving open docs) by loudly saying "Computer - Shutdown - Yes" and the hjinks that followed this discovery

Beared_Pip

@mathowie @rawx i found this in my therapy session too. It was funny, but not the right time or place. I did a sarcastic thumbs up too. So it could have been bad things I was talking about.

@mathowie but I'm more curious about your bike. I absolutely love the colors and is it a Canyon? 😍

@mathowie looks like a bag a extraterrestrial would actually have if trying to disguse as human

@mathowie you should see the looks when I walk to our mailboxes with the tote Monteiro sent me.
