Hey hello you, it's been a while since I announced something, right? It must be something like close to a year. Do I have something to announce? Yeaaah absolutely, about the future of udongein.xyz
Not gonna maintain the secret for too long: udongein.xyz will never see 2025.
"Why?" you may ask, and this is a legitimate question, and it will be answered. As some of you might have noticed I have gone missed in action for almost all 2024, for a simple reason: I don't vibe with my account/followers/followees/federation any more. The few times I connected and looked at what I missed, it just felt like an unpleasant chore.
In addition to this unsynced vibe, a few other elements add up:
- Pleroma requires some maintenance, especially when it breaks (pg_repack
is your best friend is you have timeout queries), not that much, but still some work (I assume that Akkoma is the same)
- Even if local users bunnies doesn't make (that much?) trouble, it is still a responsibility
- The machine hosting the instance is awfully hard to migrate, and consumes quite some energy
It is not something I constantly think about, but more like a background noise in my head that reminds me how broken the situation is, dragging my mood down.
Yes the instance runs quite smoothly, but people doesn't know it is a 8CPU, 16GB RAM host, and the pinnacle is the database, PostgreSQL takes a bit more than 174GB of disk space (this is mostly indexes). This ridiculous space makes it virtually impossible to move, not without lost data (pruning old objects) and/or an insane downtime (estimated about a week of computing to rebuild all indexes). Yes, I tried several approaches, but none was successful or satisfying.
So, what's the plan? As I have already said, this instance won't see 2025. Also the gitea will be gone at the same time. The simple reason is, I won't own the hardware any more, so I can't host anything on it once the transaction made. The server is something I bought with a friend (50-50) for a project and represents a valuable amount of money that I kinda need as I am broke side of finances. Friend wants to buy the other 50%, I need money.
Now, what's the future, is udongein.xyz gone forever? Maybe, maybe not. The domain is valid until december 2025. Three options come to my mind:
1. I let the domain expire, and whomever squat/buy it
2. I transfer the domain to someone I trust to not host an online casino website
3. A new instance is made on another subdomain
I am not a fan of the first solution, and I'm not sure if I can endorse the responsibility of hosting a semi-public service. So, the second solution is the most likely.
Now, what you should do is doing an export of your following list, migrate to another instance and observe. I will do an announcement when the date is known.
Loving all the udongein.xyz users, the current and past users. And remember: Praise NaiJi!

@duponin @drq
@duponin I confirm this.
I'm not having a friendly instance with a unique community just vanish.
So. I'm taking it upon myself to host Udongein.xyz. I'm not going to be responsible for moderation or hands-on administration, first of all because I'm stretched thin as it is, second - I'm not qualified to do things the Udongein way - I might just ruin everything, and finally because I'm not an expert in how Pleroma operates.
But I will help Udongein the best I can so it sees another day. And who's better than @yura to lead it.
Still, me hosting Udongein can't be a permanent solution, so will be finding ways to further its presence, buying new hardware if we must.
For now, though, Udongein stays. Praise Naiji.
