Normalize referring to hard coded domains in software used for pushing updates, pushing configuration changes or dynamic code, etc. "C&C domains" (in the malware sense). And block them all as such. I believe this is useful terminology for distro policy, e.g. in the sense of "packagers must patch out all C&C domain names". @dalias Well there's long existing usage for calling auto-updating software/configuration botnets, which I think is a bit more transparent and well-known in meaning than "C&C domains".
Sacrifice: let my own conditions become materially worse so that others or my future self may benefit. Accelerationism: make others' conditions become materially worse so they'll choose to sacrifice and benefit me. @dalias@hachyderm.io Antoinettism: make others' conditions become materially worse so they'll choose to sacrifice me. Yesterday I encountered a "wrong-on-the-internet" rando professing his excitement for "using machine learning" in #3dprinting to throttle speeds in the right places to avoid quality loss. While completely not worth engaging with, I feel like this is a useful example to understand why this idiocy is so infuriating...

@dalias at least in part, this is testament to our collective failure to make actual engineering accessible to normal people. I can believe that for a lot of people a usually-good-enough ML solution is easier, even though we know it’s profoundly stupid and wasteful. @dalias Can you tell us more about why machine learning isn’t a good fit for this? Though I didn’t even know throttling speeds could possibly improve quality. Knowing little it sounds possible? But what tipped you off that it would not work? Techbros' idea of "democratizing" software is not that anyone can get software to meet their personal needs but that anyone can ship malware. The libertarian premise that the only freedom that matters is being able to do whatever in the pursuit of money. A few months back I recall seeing someone on here asking about addressing pets as royalty or something. For anyone to whom this knowledge may be of interest: our cat is addressed/spoken of as "your chonkiness"/"his chonkiness". Galaxy brain: submit bug bounties that are actually malware in the reproducer testcase, then claim more bounties for pwning the recipients. Periodic reminder: if you find I (or anyone else you follow) boosts too much and it's cluttering your feed, the ... on my profile page has "Hide boosts from..." It's a great way to curate your feed without unfollowing.

I wish there was a way to tag boosted toots with some form of "Yeah, seen this one enough, thanks." AI is a lot like fossil fuel industry. Seizing and burning something (in this case, the internet, and more broadly, written-down human knowledge) that was built up over a long time much faster than it could ever be replenished. I think a lot of ppl who are skeptical of the criticisms here really don't understand how it's *burning* anything because they haven't thought about how value is derived from provenance. |
