A lot of people worry that commercial networks joining the fediverse will inevitably take over the network, "like Gmail took over email." Except, y'know, Gmail hasn't taken over email. There are 4.5B active email users (Radicati), 1.5B Gmail users (CNBC). About 1/3. Maybe all the people you know use Gmail. Maybe that says more about the people you know than about the state of the email network. Email remains robust, decentralized and diverse in 2023.

@evan I wonder what the e-mail market shares would look like by message traffic. E.g. I have an e-mail account from my broadband provider that probably would end up in the stats you quote, but that I never use. I don't even know its address. @evan Yup. 100% this. It's inevitable that there will be massive servers that most people end up on. That doesn't mean others won't exist and be able to thrive. My accountant uses Hotmail. 🤦♂️ @evan I believe the problem is not just that email is run on Gmail servers, but that Gmail takes up enough accounts that if you want to be a server communicating with all accounts, you have to play by their rules. Even if you don't host on Gmail, you will follow their commands. I think. Either way, I believe the right "conspiracy theory" would be to accuse Gmail, Microsoft and Yahoo of oligopoly, and not just Gmail of monopoly. I will say that some of the smartest people working on Mastodon and the fediverse right now are working on this very problem, and I'm pretty excited to see it become part of the stack. Hello friends at @w3c ! Please put your Mastodon handle on the front page of the w3c.org web site, near where the Twitter handle is. Also, the site looks great! @evan Its an option, even though it only works on cloudflare. The question is, how good are the data liberation option? If all data can be exported and I can drop it easily in a different mastodon server that I host later on, then this is cool. @evan no, this is just shamelesd EEE. Voting ended 2 Jan 2023 at 18:37. Very interesting! I am a qualified no. First there's no single "federated timeline". It's a Mastodon feature that lets you eavesdrop on the conversations of other people on your instance. As such, it's a place for discovery. It's explicitly stuff that you personally haven't subscribed to (yet). It's the feed of posts that aren't interesting to you. Anonymous poll

@evan and poor people love hearing about how making everyone else poor will save the world @evan and the solution is so easy, as it is simply the reverse: saving the world will make them more money. It's not enough to squat a Mastodon handle that you never use. It's not enough to automatically repost your Twitter timeline. You have a chance to be part of something new. Something important. To shape it in the right way. With all of us. Breathe life into *this* community and *this* network by posting here, creating here, connecting here. Be here now.

@evan There's a ton of reposts. I ignore most of those as trash. Some people are out there begging to become big names here that were followed by thousands of fake followers on birdsite. I ignore them too. @evan Yes please! I was just invited to join and betatest Post, and found that the content is mostly posted from Twitter or links to Twitter. Seriously, who needs that? Voting ended 29 Nov 2022 at 22:27. I'm trying to get my shot in saying hello to famous people while they still have like 14 followers If we can fit about 10-100K people on a Mastodon server, and we've got 38M Canadians, then we're going to need 400 to 4000 Canadian servers. Let's start building them. If you have the financial and technical ability to do so, it's probably a good time to set up a Mastodon server.

@evan Maybe we need some sort of community / techie speed dating or something, to get people connected up around issues and interests they care about. So, who's at Automattic? They need to turn on the ActivityPub plugin for .com users and consider setting up a Mastodon server.

@evan @debirdify The system that does the backups is distinct from the servers handling normal user traffic. If you want your archive get it while you can. 12

This was a good poll. Lots of interesting comments.
I'm a qualified yes. I love my home and my community in Montreal and my second home in Richmond the Eastern Townships, but I'm a settler on indigenous land, and we haven't figured out how that can be a just situation yet.
I'm also far from my parents and brothers in the San Francisco Bay Area, and my extended family in New Jersey.
