This was a good poll. Lots of interesting comments.

I'm a qualified yes. I love my home and my community in Montreal and my second home in Richmond the Eastern Townships, but I'm a settler on indigenous land, and we haven't figured out how that can be a just situation yet.

I'm also far from my parents and brothers in the San Francisco Bay Area, and my extended family in New Jersey.

Hey gang! Should we buy TikTok and make it federated?

...will he ever win?

@evan Sort of? Something like Peertube could be coerced into serving a similar function, given a mobile client and a clever algorithm.

That algorithm is the main product of TikTok. It's unsettlingly good at catering content to the viewer-- hell, it diagnosed me with ADHD before any doctor did. But I also had to delete the app because I couldn't stop myself from scrolling round the clock.

Occasionally I wonder whether an algorithm like that could have a chance at redemption, if the perverse profit-greedy drive for engagement could be removed, or if that's just an inherent trait of an algorithmic feed.

Who's "we"? I'm not paying for that! I don't even use it!

Evan Prodromou

A lot of people worry that commercial networks joining the fediverse will inevitably take over the network, "like Gmail took over email."

Except, y'know, Gmail hasn't taken over email.

There are 4.5B active email users (Radicati), 1.5B Gmail users (CNBC). About 1/3.

Maybe all the people you know use Gmail.

Maybe that says more about the people you know than about the state of the email network.

Email remains robust, decentralized and diverse in 2023.

@evan I wonder what the e-mail market shares would look like by message traffic. E.g. I have an e-mail account from my broadband provider that probably would end up in the stats you quote, but that I never use. I don't even know its address.

Matthew Jones

@evan Yup. 100% this. It's inevitable that there will be massive servers that most people end up on. That doesn't mean others won't exist and be able to thrive.

My accountant uses Hotmail. 🤦‍♂️

Filipe

@evan I believe the problem is not just that email is run on Gmail servers, but that Gmail takes up enough accounts that if you want to be a server communicating with all accounts, you have to play by their rules. Even if you don't host on Gmail, you will follow their commands. I think.

Either way, I believe the right "conspiracy theory" would be to accuse Gmail, Microsoft and Yahoo of oligopoly, and not just Gmail of monopoly.

"Posts on Mastodon are not end-to-end encrypted." Neither are email messages or SMS.

Evan Prodromou

I will say that some of the smartest people working on Mastodon and the fediverse right now are working on this very problem, and I'm pretty excited to see it become part of the stack.

Evan Prodromou

Hello friends at @w3c !

Please put your Mastodon handle on the front page of the w3c.org web site, near where the Twitter handle is.

Also, the site looks great!

Big shout out to all the Mozillians coming on board!

@evan This feels like it should be the first question in a very long survey where I am asked to write a paragraph about my response to each question 😅

@evan the polls are like an expected thing now. You can't stop.

@evan Its an option, even though it only works on cloudflare. The question is, how good are the data liberation option? If all data can be exported and I can drop it easily in a different mastodon server that I host later on, then this is cool.

jan Anja :toki:

@evan no, this is just shamelesd EEE. Support independent non-corporate projects like @mastohost instead!

xabi

@evan I’d use it as a backup solution or to test stuff but I believe you *need* the image bit, which is 5$ per month.

Is it wrong for people to clog up the federated timeline with uninteresting posts?

Very interesting! I am a qualified no.

First there's no single "federated timeline". It's a Mastodon feature that lets you eavesdrop on the conversations of other people on your instance.

As such, it's a place for discovery. It's explicitly stuff that you personally haven't subscribed to (yet). It's the feed of posts that aren't interesting to you.

@evan and poor people love hearing about how making everyone else poor will save the world

Denny Vrandečić

@evan and the solution is so easy, as it is simply the reverse: saving the world will make them more money.

Evan Prodromou

It's not enough to squat a Mastodon handle that you never use.

It's not enough to automatically repost your Twitter timeline.

You have a chance to be part of something new. Something important. To shape it in the right way.

With all of us.

Breathe life into *this* community and *this* network by posting here, creating here, connecting here.

@evan There's a ton of reposts. I ignore most of those as trash. Some people are out there begging to become big names here that were followed by thousands of fake followers on birdsite. I ignore them too.

Stoneface Vimes

@evan trying to. But currently I'm mostly just getting used to things.

Suzanne Stephens :verified:

@evan Yes please! I was just invited to join and betatest Post, and found that the content is mostly posted from Twitter or links to Twitter. Seriously, who needs that?

@evan
Social media was a natural and necessary development once humans got a working network.

It has to be controlled by the users, not some merely profit-seeking corporation, in order for society to be healthy and just. In practice, that means decentralized, and federated seems to be a solid working model of that.

It is NOT sufficient for a healthy and just society. It's a step in the right direction, but there's a lot more work to be done as a society.

I'm trying to get my shot in saying hello to famous people while they still have like 14 followers

Evan Prodromou

If we can fit about 10-100K people on a Mastodon server,

and we've got 38M Canadians,

then we're going to need 400 to 4000 Canadian servers.

Let's start building them.

@evan Why is there a limit to the number of people on a server? Could an instance not just scale up with hardware as it grows?

Evan Prodromou

If you have the financial and technical ability to do so, it's probably a good time to set up a Mastodon server.

@evan Maybe we need some sort of community / techie speed dating or something, to get people connected up around issues and interests they care about.

@evan You thinking for personal usage here or shared?

Evan Prodromou

So, who's at Automattic? They need to turn on the ActivityPub plugin for .com users and consider setting up a Mastodon server.

Dr. Quadragon ❌

@evan They should have considered OStatus for Wordpress out of the box back at the very beginning of the project, I'd say.

Same for @bradfitz's Livejournal engine.

If they did, the history of the Internet might have been completely different.

Friends, while Twitter still mostly works:

- Add your Mastodon address to your Twitter bio. There are tools that help people follow you automatically.
- Run @debirdify so you can do that thing.
- For friends you didn't follow, send DMs telling them how to move.
- Do a backup if you haven't already. If you have, maybe don't stress out the servers.
- Start posting here.
