Just found the #TestContainers project:

testcontainers.com

> Unit tests with real dependencies. Testcontainers is an open source framework for providing throwaway, lightweight instances of databases, message brokers, web browsers, or just about anything that can run in a Docker container.

Heads up to the #ActivityPub test suite projects. This may be interesting.

@activitypubtestsuite

I updated the test feedback wiki on #SocialHub: socialhub.activitypub.rocks/t/

Sustainable FOSS. What is that?

Not long ago I found an article by Gabriel Mays titled "Business questions worth asking". It listed about 55 questions that went a bit more light-hearted about considering various biz-related aspects than BizCrap usually found when searching for #LeanCanvas and similar buzzwords.

Yet it wasn't really applicable to #FOSS projects. So I gave all questions a pass and reformulated to be more appropriate. From here it can be further improved.

Yes, you can ditch #GoogleMaps now..

organicmaps.app

#OrganicMaps is here. Use it while offline and feel good about a #privacy-respecting app that doesn't suck you dry of your personal information. Based on #OpenStreetMap this app is gonna blow #Google #Maps out of the water (hopefully ;)

@smallcircles
It looks really good but doesn't give the best routes. Then again, I wouldn't say Google did, either.

movodehe

@smallcircles Yes, you CAN ditch Google Maps, but @organicmaps is not (yet) a full replacement. Mostly because of:
1. worse search
2. no public transport
3. slower routing for long trips
4. no online mode
4.1. no live traffic

It has advantages:
1. better map
2. privacy
3. better offline map management

But I have to use Google Maps from time to time, because of one of the disadvantages. However no Google Maps user ever has to switch to @organicmaps for any of its disadvantages.
Big fan anyway!

@J12t asked for a name to be given to the architectural style of the #Fediverse.

My thinking was:

> Communal social network: A distributed social networking architecture where the nodes or servers facilitate one or more people, who either interact with their community group or with participants in other groups that exist within the broader network. An example is the Fediverse, where nodes are called "instances".

#CommunalSocialNetwork WDYT?

Johannes Ernst

@smallcircles it appears to me that architectural pattern could be applied just the same to software that isn’t really a social network. A game, for example. Or a collaboration tool. Or a wiki for a particular community etc.

Heard on HN re: #Reddit

> We (the internet community) made such a terrible mistake with #SocialMedia. We formed connections and communities and friendships [but] those connections are only allowed to exist as long as they are part of a profitable system. How awful it is to reduce human connection to that. To think that I am only allowed to maintain certain social connections as long as they continue to produce monetary value for an intermediary. An awful, awful mistake.

@smallcircles I don't mind most of my relationships being structured around an economic one, what I dislike about IG/twitter/telegram type space is the manipulation by very powerful forces, which probably inevitably goes with capitalism.

@smallcircles This is the first time I have recognized what's going on right now. I am an old luddite but I trust you tech guys&gals to win.

@smallcircles THANK You - great words! Also on this thread: "We spent so many years crowdsourcing these curated knowledge bases on a variety of subjects for free to the point that it's empowered the controlling companies to firewall them now and then make our input a commodity that they can turn around and sell to us....They take our words and ideas and give nothing back in return."

Hurray! The #Fediverse is evolving and the #FEP's keep coming πŸŽ‰

@trwnh has just PR'ed the following enhancement proposal that deals with an improvement of the FEP process itself:

#ActivityPub
FEP-9606: Using w3id.org/fep as a namespace for extension terms and for FEP documents

Check it out at: codeberg.org/fediverse/fep/src

And provide your feedback on #SocialHub at: socialhub.activitypub.rocks/t/

#FOSS community is so focused on tech concerns, that it often loses sight of non-technical objectives. #Fediverse is a perfect example.

Ask yourself: What's the key defining quality leading to success of our fedi?

Well, no. Though they're important, it isn't #ActivityPub or #Mastodon.

πŸ‘‰ "It's the #Culture, stupid!"

All our #grassroots efforts to slowly get where we currently are, created favorable conditions for true #Social to emerge.

And NOW we must protect that!

@smallcircles This instances wonderful moderator who cuts off the most horrific parts of human communication is *who* makes communication much more enjoyable here.

I happily support them financially fort hat.

@smallcircles
You know I recently come to think about power dynamics.

Like for example, how would you handle someone who positioned themself in a favourable position and then grab for power?

Certain areas don't offer enough choice to simply walk away.

FOSS way would be to fork.
But there's a cost attached to it.
