So, the plan for Summer of Mycorrhiza is as follows.

The long-awaited 1.15 version will be released this summer, featuring all the various changes that were done since 1.14 (2023-04-07). It shall be called “Cumulative Summer 2024 Update”.

Track the progress here: github.com/bouncepaw/mycorrhiz

I don't want to postpone 1.15 too much.

And then 1.16 shall follow. I hope it will feature the coolest refactoring. It might take another year. Did you know that Mycorrhiza's codebase is a mess?

v0.3 of Heffalump (a Mastodon client for PalmOS) is out now! This release (finally) adds the ability to view your own past toots, as well as replies (to both your own and others' toots).

You can grab the app and the conduit installer from the release here: github.com/knickish/heffalump_ or read more about Heffalump generally here: knickish.com/palm/rust/2023/09

....starting rummaging in old drawers where the old Work Pad should be sleeping....

Roberto

@knickish how would one connect a palm to a modern WiFi? This is a blocker for me.

Last week i read a few articles about scientific studies that seem to show that

- people forget everything they learn in school, unless they already know it from general osmosis
- people also forget everything they learn in university, but it doesn't matter because people don't go there to learn but to get a degree
- scientists (especially sociologists) do not understand statistics, not even statisticians
- the likelihood of a paper passing peer review is only lightly correlated to the quality of the paper

I guess the first thing explains why it seems to matter so little (after a decade) whether you send a kid to a regular school or do something like homeschooling or montessori. Although it's hard to say if this applies to all kinds of schooling or just to the current degree-based system.

This research shows that aptitude for learning foreign languages is a stronger predictor of learning to program than basic maths knowledge.

"These results provide a novel framework for understanding programming aptitude, suggesting that the importance of numeracy may be overestimated in modern programming education environments."

@yabellini Cool, cool, cool. Génial. Geil.

Grant Gould

@yabellini This is simultaneously obviously true and makes me irrationally angry that it's another thing that fucking Dijkstra was right about.

Leonard Ritter

@yabellini math is also a language (many in fact) so don't party too soon.

Bought the funny natural-ingredients free-software Cherry Cola forked from Open Cola. It's not tasty... I guess I crave sugar in my soft drinks.

Odo Tournesol

@bouncepaw Your taste is acclimated to things with refined sugar in them. Try eating nothing sweet - like only plain rice and boiled potatoes -- for several weeks and then try the recipe again

LemonardoSoftDrinks/CherryCola: 100% natural Cherry Cola recipe based on Open Cola recipe.

LemonardoSoftDrinks/CherryCola: 100% natural Cherry Cola recipe based on Open Cola recipe.

Cherry Cola recipe is based on the OpenCola recipe. Original recipe was modified to create 100% natural cola without any artificial ingredient. We removed sugar, caffeine and caramel color from the recipe, replaced phosphoric acid with lemon juice, and used chokeberry juice as a coloring agent and added cherry juice to make cherry cola.

GNU General Public License.

During lunch a friend mentioned that you can just supply a HTTP URL to vim on the command line and it would use curl to download that resource and allow you to edit the content. I jokingly asked whether if you enter :w it would then issue a HTTP POST back to the origin which is of course ridiculous.

It issues a PUT

@conorh
Alas full vim doesn't seem that common. No idea what arch uses (vi is linked to ed somehow) and Debian uses vim.tiny which doesn't have any of this.

DrYak

@conorh That's indeed the appropriate protocol for webdav servers (btw, other editors do the same, e.g.: KDE's Kate also supports out-of-box working with remote files. I use this a lot for work. One more reason why I prefer working on Linux)

How to tell your OSS is ridiculously popular: people aren't 100% sure they _didn't_ embed it, and tack on the software equivalent of "packaged in a facility where peanuts were also present" to the license list.

This watch contains software, so statistically probably contains at least traces of curl.

@danderson @mralex hilarious. I’ll have to see if my Garmin has the same thing.

@danderson (to the tune of Sex Bomb) SBOM, SBOM, where's that SBOM ... You can give it to me so I know what's going on.

Hits-of-Code Instead of SLoC

Hits-of-Code Instead of SLoC

How about we measure the amount of times programmers touch the lines. Instead of counting the number of lines we’ll count how many times they were actually modified—we can get this information from Git (or any other SCM). The more you touch that part of the aircraft—the more effort you spent on it, right?

I called it Hits-of-Code (HoC) and created a small tool to help us calculate this number in just one line.

What a nice idea! I installed this program and ran it on Betula and Mycorrhiza codebases. For Betula it's 26350 HoC, for Mycorrhiza it's 137208 HoC. Yeah, Betula is still comparatively young! Hey, what about Mycomarkup? 23443. Oh wow, just a little less than Betula. I expected a small number.
