This is a personal story I hope will give web designers and user interface experts some food for thought: my experience with reading digital screens with eyesight degraded by cataract. There may be more users with suboptimal vision than usually thought.

New #webdev concept: The VNC test.

If viewing a website over a VNC session uses less data than directly loading it in a browser, it fails the test.

Edit: Not a new concept, thank you @cybertailor for this reply!

@guenther Would music streaming web apps fail the VNC test by definition?

mittorn

@guenther @cybertailor anyway, server-side resources does matter too and just moving rendering to server cannot help in most cases, frontend must be optimized and rewrited from scratch with minimum to be compact

Been willing to install elementary OS for years. I was waiting for the moment I got a Linux-enabled device. Got one today. Tried to install on the first occasion, and... it didn't work! Also, in the Live USB I found out there was no 125% scaling. Too bad!

Went with Linux Mint Cinnamon, for the third time in my life. Boring! But it has 125% scaling and actually got installed on the device. Not in the mood for distrohopping now.

Software Manager just hanged the entire computer. I'm kinda not used to that anymore...

A simple drawing of a fir tree, crowned with the pentagon symbolizing the Fediverse. There are some christmas bulbs hanging in the tree, which have the avatars of the mentioned accounts inside. The accounts appear in the tree in the same order as the mentions, from top to bottom and from left to right. The order symbolizes the number of interactions, from most to least.

I've been thinking about an association to keep our own archives online. At one point I had taken some model articles of association and written them up for a podcast of mine. At the time, this didn't go anywhere. But for this archiving association, I think the association comes first, the technicalities come later.

I'm envisioning discussions to happen via email. Or via encrypted email, even! 🤯

(Is this the moment for Delta Chat to shine?)

When I create a static copy of my site, it takes 2.9G.
If I zip it up, it takes 2.8G because pictures and videos do not compress well. 😭

Because this is the talk of the #internet again: you don't preserve digital media by stuffing the One True Version in an #archive. Make countless copies and scatter them to the wind. Make each a different format. You don't know which of them will still be readable next decade, so *don't try to guess*.

That goes for analog media too. The Library of Alexandria contained copies. Many classic paintings only survived as copies.

Copying is how life itself beats death. Embrace it.

@felix This is exactly the point of the fantastic (FANTASTIC!) book "How the Irish Saved Civilization" (which I just finished).

@felix Yes. The One Giant Archive is for convenience of lookup, not for preservation.
