For your personal email in particular, if you don't have 2FA set up, get there ASAP. Ask yourself: where do the "forgot your passwords" messages from _every other thing in your life_ go?

Stuffed animals that ship vacuum packed seem uniquely disgruntled about their situation.

Seriously, the Chrome team just landed a patch that lets sites block "View Source" _right in the middle_ of the Chrome Dev Summit.

"In the future everyone will be famous for fifteen minutes", Mr. Warhol you are like little baby with your adorable toy 20th century notion of fame, we all get 48 hours where a billion people love or despise you and tell all their friends about you at once and it will be like doing an arm-long line of coke while shanking yourself in the spine with an epipen while the Sauron's Eye of global celebrity reduces you to a Vice article, a knowyourmeme page and a smoking crater where your identity was.

This is a great paper that says it's about code complexity metrics but is really about the superstitions that can abound in a young, poorly-understood field: tu-chemnitz.de/informatik/ST/p

mhoye

We've built elaborate tooling around code complexity metrics, to try and rein in the difficulties of managing complex codebases, but do those metrics actually correlate with programmer's brains working harder? It's a small sample in this paper, but so far the answer is: nope. Not at all.

Lazyweb, I'm listening to The Weeknd's Blinding Lights, and I know _for sure_ I've heard that synth beat intro before somewhere before. Question: where?

Google is a "cornerstone sponsor" of FOSDEM this year, which is being run entirely on Matrix, accessible on Android via Element, which has just been pulled from Google's Play Store. FOSDEM is in a week. This all makes perfect sense.

Shopping for things that are mildly electronic when you don’t want or care about apps is getting increasingly difficult.

mhoye

I mean, I’m shopping for a scale? I’d like to stand on something, see my weight accurately displayed to within a tenth of a kilo or so, and that’s it. How can I gain information about this product segment?

The term "database sharding" comes directly from some game lore that needed to be created for Ultima Online, because of the implementation details of scaling an MMORPG

Reading an early account of character encoding decisions, where the debate about whether “00000000” should mean space, null or zero. It’s a hard problem!

Darius Kazemi

@mhoye I just read this last night! I'm about halfway through the book

mhoye

Have you considered Die Hard as Among Us Fanfic though.

mhoye

@darius Do you have, or have a recommendation, for some sort of soup-to-nuts guide for how to make Masto bots?

Darius Kazemi

@mhoye I do not. It's pretty much the same as making any other kind of bot but you plug in a Mastodon API client of your choice at the end. And you do have to pick a server but I like botsin.space for that.
