@AimeeMaroux @rogueclassicist @phistorians@kolektiva.social @Chapps @vagina_museum @roob @emmaaum @Ayhaidebil1 #fannyfriday (1/2) In Maori mythology, demigod Māui-tikitiki-a-Taranga tried to reverse the cycle of life and death by entering inside Death goddess Hine-nui-te-pō through her vagina and coming out of her mouth. To do so he changed into a lizard and slid inside the sleeping Goddess' fanny, but...

It's the Day of Hermes aka Mercurius Day aka #Wednesday!

To celebrate #ChineseNewYear, the #YearOfTheRabbit, which is Hermes' sacred animal, I want to show y'all this vase painting of #Apollon and #Hermes gifting a rabbit to the Thracian goddess #Bendis.
Hermes is standing behind his older brother in his traveller's clothes, holding his signature kerykeion staff.

Bendis on the left is holding a spear, dressed in Phrygian garb with colourful long-sleeves and tights underneath an over-knee chiton and a phrygian cap and boots. Apollon is seated naked on his himation (I suppose) offering the rabbit. He is holding a laurel branch in his other hand. Behind him, Hermes is leaning on his kerykeion staff, a cloak around his shoulders and a traveller's hat on his head.

It's #NationalBirdDay so I want to talk about birds in #mythology. There are many stories from #ancientGreece about mythological birds and bird-like creatures.
The #Birds of #Ares were a flock of arrow-feathered birds guarding his shrine on the Black Sea island of Dia. The #Argonauts encounterd them in their quest for the Golden Fleece. Their shields raised in defence against the birds' deadly arrows they banged their spears against the shields and scared them off.

The Griphoi or #Griffins are hybrid creatures with the head and wings of an eagle and the body of a lion. They guard a treasure of gold by the border to Hyperborea. Griffins were popular decorations in #ancientGreek art, for example the helm of the statue of #Athena Piraeus.

A red-figure vase painting of a Dionysian party. On the left a male actor in phallus shorts and the mask of a satyr, in the centre a dancing, ithyphallic satyr and on the right a dancing maenad holding a large thyrsos, a leopard to her feet.

A flock of phalloi to see out the year. I hear that is the luckiest omen of all.

This is one of my favourite phallic finds, a pendant made of bone from Roman Britain. It was discovered in Suffolk.

#PhallusThursday #ancientRome #RomanBritain @antiquidons @histodons @phistorians

A set of photographs of a small phallus pendant made from animal bone. The phallus has a distinct crown, an about 1 cm long shaft and beautifully detailed wings with feathers carved into it. The phallus is shown from the top, from the side, from the bottom, from the front and from the back.

It's the Day of Helios / Sol's Day / #Sunday!

Sol Invictus (#Helios) with a halo of sunlight and #Mithras (to his right) feast together.
Emperor Aurelian built a new temple for Sol, which was dedicated #OTD, 25 December 274 CE. The cult, like Mithraism, had been introduced from the East

A marble relief showing a scene of offerings. At the bottom we seen an altar with a man holding a stick with a snake curled around it on the right. Left of the altar a man holding a stick or torch hands a drinking horn to Sol Invictus, seated in the sky, easily identified by his sunray crown. Beside him Mithras is seated, wearing a Phrygian cap. Both of them also hold a torch. In the top left corner a female figure is looking away from the scene to the left. She has a lunar crescent behind her shoulders, suggesting she is a moon goddess or Luna, Sol's sister.
