🥚GACHA ODDITIES🐣

I have a particular soft spot for gachapon (ガシャポン/ガチャポン), those little capsule toys you find all over Japan.

Of all the gacha oddities to be found, surely 'Kabuki Owls' (カブクロウ) have to be up there with the strangest.

As I was cleaning out my little odds-and-ends box I found these 'social media' charms (also from a gacha).

Typically sold at shrines & temples, omamori are protective amulets. The most common type is a brocade pouch containing a prayer or sacred image.

1) Protection from offensive replies クソリプ厄除
2) Prayer for likes いいね増祈願
3) Protection from being blocked ブロック厄除
4) Prayer for creating a buzz バズ祈願
5) Prayer to increase followers フォロワー増祈願
6) Protection from being the target of an online mob 炎上厄除

💌KYŌTO'S CASANOVA❤️‍🔥

Takenaka-jinja (竹中稲荷神社) is a small but beautiful sub-shrine of Yoshida-jinja (吉田神社). Standing on the western summit of Yoshida-yama, the forlorn grounds betray the shrine's vibrant history of dashing poets, civil disorder and butterfly dances.

Most of the shrine records have been lost, but in other works there is mention of a vast, snaking tunnel of shrine gates leading from mountain base to the worship hall.

During its heyday Takenaka-jinja's snaking tunnel of vermillion gates rivaled those found at Fushimi Inari (at this location the shrine gates are a fairly recent addition).

Locals would joke that in the pouring rain it was possible to stay dry on the climb up the mountain as the gates were so numerous and so densely packed together!

🎇🏮CHINESE LANTERN FESTIVAL🏮🎆

Kyōto has many light-up events during the autumn, but Manpuku-ji's is something to behold.

As one might expect from one of the country's few Chinese-style temples, the colourful lanterns are heavily influenced by festivals on the mainland.

Manpuku-ji (萬福寺) in Uji, home to the Ōbaku Zen sect (黄檗宗), was founded in 1661 by the Chinese monk Yinyuan Longqi (隱元隆琦 aka Ingen Ryūki 1592-1673). It is considered to be Japan's greatest Chinese-style temple.

Ingen (隱元隆琦) is thought to have introduced many things to Japan from the mainland, including green beans, watermelons, lotus roots, the Ming Dynasty style of writing, Buddhist cuisine, and sencha tea.
He would deeply influence Japanese society as well as religion.

👃THE SCENT OF AUTUMN🍂

I wish Mastodon had Smell-O-Vision, because Kyōto is blanketed in the wonderful fragrance of kinmokusei (金木犀) that I'd love to share with you.

Just outside the teahouse there's a giant kinmokusei bush🥰

🍵🏖️TEA ON THE EDGE🍃🌄

With each new outdoor tea ceremony, Nao-san gets a little more daring...she's even expressed a desire for some sort of bungee jump-tea combo in the future (time to start Crowdfunding🤔).

💦TRAVERSING THE RAPIDS🚣‍♂️

The famous poet Susukida Kyūkin (薄田泣菫 d.1945), upon completing his first major collection 'The Departing Spring' (ゆく春), bound the originals in a koto string, weighed them with stones, and tossed them to the water god in the depths of the Hozu River.

The Hozugawa Kudari (保津川下り lit. 'Down the Hozu River') takes 300,000 visitors a year through the Hozu Gorge (保津峡).

When his consort fell deathly sick in 680, Emperor Tenmu (天武天皇) ordered the construction of Yakushi-ji (薬師寺) as a prayer for her recovery.

👣🧘‍♀️ LOTUS LOVE🪷😇

As rainy season deepens lotus plants emerge from the muddy beds of ponds, reaching above the waters to unfurl giant leaves.
In a few short weeks alien landscapes appear where once there were only bare stretches of water.

In Kyōto 'kanrensetsu' (観蓮節), 'lotus flower viewing', coincides with the culmination of the Gion Matsuri...almost as if the flowers have appeared to welcome the gods of Yasaka-jinja into the city.

🥤THE SOLSTICE🌞

'Geshi' (夏至), the 'summer solstice', marks a period of purification in Japan.

Now that the first half of the year has passed thanks are given, and prayers made that the second half (beginning with fiercely hot months) will be healthy and misfortune free.
