An insightful blog post from @cstross summarising a lot of the furor over #microsoft #recall. The snark at the end about Microsoft making 2025 the year of Linux on the desktop made me realise a small thing that I think is important:

MS is the last hold-out still charging money for a consumer operating system. Obviously Linux is free and Apple tries to prevent their OS running on non-Apple hardware, but only MS charges you for the privilege of enduring their #AI force feeding. You’re paying them money and you’re STILL not the customer.

"It makes sense why you want to be alone.

The world is getting louder. It's getting brighter. It's getting meaner. Noise and light pollution shred our sleep. Empathy levels have dropped to record lows. It's hard to find someone willing to endure the slightest inconvenience, even for their own good. Our bosses and their bosses think they know what's best for everyone else. They don't truly appreciate difference, cognitive or otherwise. They want everyone to live the same, work the same, and consume the same. They want everyone to catch the same diseases. It's profitable for them."

Rich kids should go to public schools. The mayor should ride the subway to work. When wealthy people get sick, they should be sent to public hospitals. Business executives should have to stand in the same airport security lines as everyone else. The very fact that people want to buy their way out of all of these experiences points to the reason why they shouldn’t be able to.

@AliceMarshall very hard to build a decent world together when the most powerful and influential people believe they have a better backup only they have access to.

@AliceMarshall

Would making the wealthy and the powerful suffer like the rest of us do anything to ease our suffering? If we're going to make a list of "shoulds," I'd go the other way:

- Public schools should be as good as private schools.

- Public transit should be as good as limos.

- Public healthcare should be as good as expensive doctors.

- All of the airport security lines should be as fast as the fastest ones.

One thing they touched on that really resonated is how much irredentist wars like those in Gaza and Ukraine are tied with climate change.

The other note that Klein made about Gaza was mentioning The Shock Doctrine. I agree with her that the ultraright Kahanist politicians in Israel are exploiting October 7 to effect a pre-existing policy of eradication of Palestinians from Gaza.

"The CEO of Spotify thinks music is made for free and is his to sell, promoted as ‘content’. Please always try to buy records (‘vinyl’), cds, T-Shirts and go to gigs where you can afford to support bands you love."

@reillypascal Also musicians, stop putting your music on there.

We all know we’ll barely make a pence from them but they want us to be dancing monkeys doing their promo.

@reillypascal@hachyderm.io Yikes! I feel less guilty for using apps that leech off of a Spotify sub without paying for it. 😬

(I do buy albums on Bandcamp, since that benefits artists a bit better for now.)

I have been on Spotify with an albums for 9 years now. This gave me 9,78€ so far, which I'd have to share with the band members from back then.

Since the record was released in 2015, we were able to sell CDs back then. Approx. 1/3 of our audience had a CD player still, and for the rest we provided Bandcamp download codes. It was possible to pay the recording this way.

Recording as a service is one of the things I offer professionally today, but musicians don't buy this no more. Since Streaming has killed the CD almost entirely, most musicians cannot afford a recording engineer any more.

But already in 2015, people told me: I cannot listen to your record, it is not on iTunes. So they simply ignored it.

It's not Spotify's fault alone. It's also the listeners who don't give a fuck about putting any effort into collecting music, buying music, finding music, etc.

@molly0xfff The thing is there is this software called rewind and I really like it.

@molly0xfff @MaZderMind das kam jetzt so oft durch die verschiedenen News Portale, dass ich meine letzte Windowsbastion — die Gamingkiste — auch mal testweise auf Ubuntu umziehe. Danke für den Anstoß 😁

... the only "reason" they are "forced" to do this, is because they are too incompetent to design + create a working simple search feature 😏🫣

Proof: "Desktop users will swear they've been in situations where they had to desperately search through emails, browser histories, and file folders trying to find that one thing they vaguely remember seeing or working on a few days prior. It's frustrating, but Microsoft may have cracked this problem... "

This is alarming. Thanks for sharing. It's a long read but all of it interesting. I was surprised to read of Ashton Kutcher's presence at the center of Thorn and their unsettling behavior in obtaining free access to all our communication. Lots of information reinforcing that wealthy, privileged forces are trying to keep us from seeing their true intentions.

The official trying to defend the Israeli policy, takes the easy way. If you're not with us, you're against us. If you take us to court your secret agenda is supporting the fighting elements of #Hamas.
Someone in the audience does not agree.

Social media disappointments:

1) Journalists are still actively participating at exTwitter, thereby actively supporting Musk, who is helping extremists bring down democracy and, by extension, a free press.

2) Reddit got away with stomping its volunteer moderators and users, and its execs are cashing in on an IPO that in a more just world would have flopped.

3) Writers I respect decided to stick with Substack despite arrogant, extremist-friendly investors and leadership.

The whole Internet is going through enshitification.

I'm old enough to remember when Internet users made dire predictions if we allowed profit-seeking corporations on the Internet at all. Many argued we shouldn't.

It is starting to look like they were right.

@dangillmor Number One kills me; what kind of person could watch all that and still participate in such a misbegotten platform?

@dangillmor that's why open markets don't work without some regulation. People just don't care enough to commit

Even though all of us living in the UK know that homelessness is terrible (and has grown exponentially since 2010), it is still shocking to see this graph.

(There are notes on methods: all countries included both rough sleeping and invisible homelessness).
