The absolute state of some gaming news sites.

Article title: "New Alan Wake II Update Is For All You Babies Out There"

The new game option: “Added option to choose between Low and Normal horror flash visual and audio intensity.”

Ah yes, people with photo-sensitivity issues should just tell their body it's being a baby. Right. Gotcha.

@gamingonlinux It's Kotaku 🤷‍♂️Fortunately there are many gaming news sites that are doing a good job

I remember watching an episode of Stranger Things, where they're in i think it was a hospital and the lights were flashing wildly. I don't have any photo medical issues, but even that I had to look away as I felt light-headed and honestly thought I was gonna pass out.

I can't imagine how some of it is for people with such real medical issues. And saying crap like this really pisses me off.

They've now adjusted the article and the author apologised. Hopefully lessons will be learned by them and other Kotaku editors on this.

@gamingonlinux have to agree, Kotaku won't learn.. they will just wait awhile before doing it again

@gamingonlinux Was the original article text also hostile/unfriendly about the addition? I know in many publications the article title and leading text are chosen not by the writers, but by the people designing the lead page and stuff. In other words, it's quite possible that Kotaku was just click-baiting people into rage clicking. Which is a shit practice, but given that people expect news and games writing to be free, and thus ad funded, it is a sad consequence.

@gamingonlinux accessibility is the greatest thing in modren gaming. Too many people take it for granted.

@gamingonlinux Yeah it's not a good thing to shame others for being afraid or not being able to tolerate things, after all, people often fear fake stuff on a daily basis e_e

@gamingonlinux
Cool, I know which game studio not to support.

Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

@Bartimaeus ...that's what you got from that? It's the writer of the article, not the game studio

Bartimaeus

@gamingonlinux
Oh thought it was the studio, sorry my beat 😀 bit short tempered today 😅

Disco Cat

@gamingonlinux And let's wish a good "Fuck off Kotaku" to Kotaku -_-

@gamingonlinux Saddly, this is the state of mind of news websites that relies on social media to get clicks and profit. Algorithms will only boost you up if you have short, memelike, catchphrases, capable of pissing people off to generate even more engagement.

@gamingonlinux

A lot of games are fucking babies.

However, Remedy Entertainment should be embarrassed they didn't include a photo-sensitive mode to begin with.

Like you said below, you don't have to be photo-sensitive to sometimes have an adverse reaction to this.

@gamingonlinux Did you read the article? The author is definitely doing a bit. “And sure, yeah, I maybe had to take a break or two when things got too scary and intense. But I’m not a weenie. Not at all. But maybe I’ll check out this new setting when I go back to play … Just to like, you know…check it out. Not because I’m scared or anything. Not at all. Quit asking.”

@samf Some of it was playful the overall title and how they were totally ignorant to the issue is not

Samf

@gamingonlinux I hear you and definitely agree that sensory concerns are legit. For context, in my day job I build websites with a focus on accessibility. I think about these issues a lot!

To me, the title is just part of the bit, but I absolutely understand how you’d feel differently. If nothing else I'm just glad Remedy added the ability to reduce the AV intensity, and I'm glad the clickbait'y Kotaku article gives folks a chance to have a conversation about all this.

boongakawunga

@gamingonlinux and here we have the baby upset by a joke title

very upset baby (doesn't get the harmless joke, angry baby)
Mega “Byte” Matt :clippy:

@gamingonlinux just to out out a different signal: it’s not the writers, it’s the managers. They make the writers make headlines that are as triggering / vague / clickbait as possible. Aftermath (ex-writers of Kotaku) has a great piece on this: aftermath.site/its-exhausting-
