I'm often asked about adding support to @pixelfed to mirror IG accounts, or import IG posts by url

Here's the thing: Pixelfed has to respect the ToS of IG, and doing this is a clear violation

Now that Threads is here, Pixelfed is likely further being monitored for compliance and I'm okay with this because I have no intention of violating API rules or ToS

The best option is to export your IG data (in JSON format) and then import to Pixelfed!

@pixelfed I really do love Instagram, and hope they eventually add federation support!

We are co-existing peacefully, and together working to bring photo sharing to even more people ❤️

I never thought I'd be saying this, but here we are in 2024 with Threads, and Meta involved in ActivityPub, what a time to be alive!

@dansup @pixelfed it's only a matter of time before Instagram becomes federated.

I can't see Instagram being a platform for photo sharing anymore. It's only for reels and stories and i dont like it :(

@dansup @pixelfed Bestest option: dump IG and commit to pixelfed!

@dansup @pixelfed Are there plans to re-enable IG import on pixelfed.social?

dansup

@Zipkid @pixelfed Yes, IG imports are temporarily disabled until I ship the refactor with support for the newest IG export format!

IG Import will be restored by this weekend 😉

Zipkid

@dansup @pixelfed I see the import is available again, but importing a fresh IG archive gives "Invalid import archive
The .zip archive you uploaded is corrupted, or is invalid. We cannot process your import at this time.

If this issue persists, please contact an administrator."

@Zipkid @pixelfed I'm aware of that issue, Instagram changed the format of their data exports.

I'm working on a fix, you will be able to import by this weekend!

@dansup @pixelfed Ok, no problem, no pressure. Thank you!

@dansup @pixelfed Hi, the import worked perfectly. What i did notice is the timestamp link on each picture, the ones with '&tf=1' at the end do work for images that existed in Pixelfed but they fail for all imported images.
