@JohnLoader6 @CriticalCupcake
respectfully, I hate this talking point

science thrives under high levels of funding and competition

you do not require a war for that

even if you did, if you consider scientific progress worth the slaughter of innocent lives then you are no ally of mine

and if you think progress in an arms race that will eventually annihilate us all is any type of progression for humanity and not a regression then

I have no time for a fragile masculinity that looks with reverence to killing machines and weapons for war

Ban El Al from our skies

@normjess @CriticalCupcake in war there is often no competition but allocated work. Radar, aircraft design including jets, rockets, your microwave, all had increased speed of development. It isn’t a good thing just a fact.

@normjess @CriticalCupcake I have the 1923 Encyclopedia Brittanica which is the 1911 version with several new volumes of updates. Obviously armament changes feature but aviation and vehicles show the massive changes.

@JohnLoader6 if I sat here listing every invention that was in no way a result of war I'd be here forever

the products of the World Wars seem grand right now because we live in their immediate aftermath!

the people who actually fought in them would be disgusted at how subsequent generations glorify a time where they had to live under the constant threat of destruction!

its human instinct to invent, and that's been harnessed in the modern day by markets and the state so it can be the first on the moon or have the best educated citizens

who knows how many inventions you'd have if so many citizens weren't constrained by finances

war is not the optimal method for scientific advancement

anyone who thinks so lacks imagination, empathy for human suffering, or the ability to understand humanity in larger contexts rather than just nostalgia for the HIGH COST products of recent history

its the method favoured by the resurgence of far right lunatics and those who want to escalate the arms race to destruction

I realize your point is merely that it happens, but science thrives under a lot of circumstances

even if it were the optimal one, use one where there's no bodies
