Buy books, movies and music on physical media while you still can. At least download digital media to store and backup on your own devices.

There's a colossal multimedia industry that wants to make consumers forever dependent on perpetual subscriptions that get more expensive all the time. If they decide to delete it from their catalog, you have no recourse.

Buy a book or recording once and enjoy it for a lifetime! #BuyPhysicalMedia

@analogfusion It looks like Scarecrow video in Seattle has DVD rental by mail now.

I fully believe in physical media, but it’s rare when I buy a DVD now. Unlike an album that I’ll listen to multiple times, I just don’t rewatch movies often enough to justify the cost.

I’ve got too much catching up to do on things I haven’t seen.

Lance

@colorblindcowboy That makes sense, and I'm glad to hear rentals are still an option. I don't buy a lot of movies, but I do invest in favorite TV series as I like to revisit them now and then.

I'm currently debating whether to buy Star Trek: TNG on Blu-Ray. I bought a second hand complete set on DVD, but the Blu-Ray version has been remastered. Judging from sample screen images, it's a major improvement over the old broadcast copies.

@analogfusion Oh yeah? I’d be curious to see the quality difference. I suppose I can see on YouTube. I hope they left the aspect ratio the same. I’ve seen some shows change it, and use a variety of different tech to adjust.

Lance

@colorblindcowboy You can see some sample comparisons on Amazon user reviews. The colors sparkle and some effects have apparently been improved. Someone said the episodes are letter-boxed, which I'm fine with.

@analogfusion but that means they cropped the top/bottom or utilized off-scene footage. Curious. I’ll have to take a look at how they did.

Lance

@colorblindcowboy It's possible I'm misinformed. As long as I get all the footage in high-res, I'll be happy. :)

@analogfusion It’s like we’re in the reverse of the old pan-scan days when movies were reformatted for small screens.

@analogfusion You’re reminding me that I have years of Bandcamp downloads ahead of me. I need to buy a hard drive to back up all of it.

Lance

@sfphotogirl And another drive, if you don't have one large enough, to back it up! :)

@sfphotogirl @analogfusion I have all these damn slips of paper, download codes that came with records. I never use them, but I can’t bring myself to throw them out.

H Polley

@colorblindcowboy @analogfusion Me, too. I keep them in the record sleeves.

@sfphotogirl @analogfusion Download cards are going to be like the fan club postcards we find in record sleaves from the ‘70s.

Kids will find them 20 years from now, and the urls will no longer be in service.

@analogfusion As @shibacomputer has said: "Pirate the media you love. You never know when it will be bought by a hedge fund".

Lance

@AnCaoladoir Pirate, yes... Or buy, if possible. Either way, possess it.

@kel @analogfusion I can see the good sense in this, but I also struggle with it as a consumer. I know it's much better for the artists as well to buy directly--I would still probably be a digital purchaser because I find physical media both harder to access and less convenient--but that's infinitely more expensive, and I don't know how to merry those two facts. I try to buy my very favorites, when I find something meaningful, but I love so much it becomes difficult, monetarily.

Lance

@FrostPoem @kel There are always cases where buying the physical media may be impractical for some people.

kel

@FrostPoem @analogfusion

I agree 💯

One possible answer is small local communities of people who like similar things buying and sharing, like a library!

...but you are right!

❄️Faerie❄️

@kel @analogfusion Oh that's a lovely idea. I wonder how that could be managed.

kel

@FrostPoem @analogfusion

I mean, your local actual library may be a good place to start 😊

❄️Faerie❄️

@kel @analogfusion Oh yes! I do that whenever possible, as well. Less for music, though--no way to digitally do that as far as I'm aware. And I do set aside a little money to buy one book a month, too.

kel

@FrostPoem @analogfusion

Cool!

I promised myself I would join the library this year, still not done it yet.

Thank you for the reminder.

❄️Faerie❄️

@kel @analogfusion I hope you enjoy, when you do! It's a lovely place! I have fonder memories from it in childhood, when I needed to go directly to pick up audiobooks, but they're still the most amazing places, even if you only comb the shelves digitally.

kel

@FrostPoem @analogfusion

Thanks - I will I am sure!

Happy to bring back some nice childhood memories too!
