Organic Maps

As fosstodon is now invite-only, we've created an account at mastodon.social/@organicmaps to reach more people. FOSS should be available to anyone, right?

@organicmaps I'm confused: don't you already have the fosstodon account?

citrula

@organicmaps Only registration is invite only. Anyone from other instances can view your account and follow you on their own instance.

skaphle

@organicmaps If you want to change your server, there should be an option to migrate while keeping all your followers.

Organic Maps

@skaphle The goal is to reach more people without barriers, is server change the only possible/the best solution?

nevial

@organicmaps @skaphle I don't understand, is fosstodon blocked by some instances? If not, it shouldn't matter if it's invite-only because people can still easily follow (that's the whole idea of the Fediverse)

@organicmaps
Fosstodon being invite-only does not prevent new users to follow this account from whatever instance they are on 😁

@organicmaps ppl can still follow u from other instances even if fosstodon is invite only, it's not a bad thing to have an invite-only instance

anyway I'm glad to hear that people are trying to care abt fediverse issues <3

@organicmaps Making the instance invite-only is a way to support decentralisation. You should be proud of your instance taking such a stance against growth for the sake of growth!

@organicmaps I don't understand. People can follow you on Fosstodon even if they don't have a fosstodon account. It's also possible to migrateurs account and transfert all of your followers by going into the settings.

@organicmaps people from other instances are still able to follow your Fosstodon account, unless Fosstodon explicitly defederates from their instance. invite-only registration doesn't change that in any way.

@organicmaps mastodon.social is considered too big already. Maybe mapstodon.space from @jeremy would be an option worth considering.

@organicmaps no reason to move, it's ok that FOSS projects may need to clear some hurdles to make an account here but you're still just as visible across all of Mastodon

Organic Maps

@wilbr Good to know, thanks for the explanation. The web UI could be more friendly about following others instead of pasting links into the search field.

wb x64

@organicmaps yeah you can search for accounts inside your UI but finding another user via link and following them remotely is hard. Remote follow used to be a feature but it was really weird and didn't work very well

@organicmaps Errrm we see you from the other istances/servers.
Social.linux.pizza here...
Of course you can move to a instance with a huge number of registered profiles, open to new user registrations, but this will change nearly nothing

@organicmaps Does that mean you’ll stop posting from this account?

I’m confused as to why you’re doing this.

Adam

@organicmaps This is quite confusing for those following this account. Please either mark this account to the new instance or state the purpose of the second account. Limiting registration on an instance is not restricting anyone. People can still be invited and everyone can still see you outside a specific instance.

jabberati

@organicmaps This makes things kind of confusing with multiple official accounts. Also applying your principle, everyone would just be on the largest instance on the Fediverse. People will boost your posts and then more people will follow from their instances, I wouldn't about popularity so much as to violate the federation principle.

@organicmaps As others already stated: there is no need for you to create another account on another instance because your instance makes new accs invite-only.

Additionally: there is a function in mastodon to move your existing account to another instance and take all your followers with you.

And lastly: if you move your account to another instance please choose any other instance than the behemoth that has gotten too big for its own good and too big for a federated mastodon world in general.

@organicmaps From my point of view there are only 2 reasons why you would change instance:
1) your current one folds
2) you no longer feel happy at your current instance (or rather the people there)
REACH is not a reason as many have pointed out before me. Size is also not an indication of activity or quality - I moved from my first one which was larger than my current one but less active and the posts there were not that interesting for me. So if you no longer feel happy at fosstodon, then move but otherwise stay put. Only those instances fosstodon mutes or blocks cannot follow you but those are probably not followers you would care about.

@organicmaps
Why would it matter that Fosstodon is invite-only? You can be followed from any other instance, right?
