On fedi:
- we have CWs
- we have the ability to mute words
- there is no algorithm

Therefore, it is bad form to censor words (e.g. "r*pe", "k*ll") because that evades people's mute lists. These censoring conventions were created to evade algorithmic moderation on other platforms, which, again, we don't have here.

Instead, just use the words and apply an appropriate CW if you think it's needed.

If you feel bad/awkward writing triggery words out, think about how the threat of shadowbanning or downranking on corporate platforms has made you afraid to speak openly about difficult topics, and how nice it is to be on a platform where we can choose how we protect others and ourselves from potentially triggering or upsetting posts.

It's time to unlearn the things other platforms have forced us to internalize.

@tess

We’re all conditioned to be trigger shy.

Dana Fried

@paninid that's what CWs are for if you use them; there's already a thing for that.

@tess @paninid

Thanks for this, as I've found myself doing that at times, for the very reasons you mention.

Shameless coattail add-on here:
Please use Alt Text.
It greatly helps some Mastodon users have a good, and equal, experience.

#alttext can be a creative way to embed Easter Eggs, too

@tess Every time I read about someone using "unalive," or onions as a synonym for unions, I just get existentially sad about how deeply platforms have shaped language.

@xgranade @tess cutesy euphemisms for “pandemic” really make me sad these days, not necessarily because of the cw but it just feels like every serious topic is now a joke

Mike M.

@xgranade @tess
"Onions"? I missed that one.

"No, you can't fool me, I'm sticking to the Onion..."

The mental contortions we go through are amazing. Changing "fireman" to "firefighter" took some work, but at least it was logical.

I'm not going to CW-scold anyone; whether to use a CW depends on a lot of factors and is a very personal choice.

If someone is talking about things that upset you without a CW you can always unfollow, mute (temporarily or permanently), or mute specific terms.

@tess
Thank you for the cw reminder.

DELETED

@tess PLEASE AND THANK YOU!

Sorry about the yelling. I just really care about this issue.

Mike Dolbow

@tess huh - I never thought of that before! Thanks for sharing the reasoning around that, it makes sense.

Mike Dolbow

@tess wait, honest question - should I apply that concept for cursing? I typically only put *s in the F bomb. And so I just realized your context wasn't what I was originally thinking it was. (Sorry I read your post too quickly.)

Daria J.

@mmdolbow @tess imo yes, you can just put „cursing” in CW

Robert Kingett on hiatus

@mmdolbow @tess Yes. Over here, if you do things like that, it erodes peoples filters, even for swearing, and that could be seen as a lot more hostile because your, in their eyes, actively making steps to get around their filters

@tess I wish we had the ability to have posts with selected words marked as having X list of words, but hidden. One may have times when some words can be dealt with, but other times not. The current system makes the post totally vanish so one can't make a case by case determination.

Both ways are needed. Some people don't want to see X word at all. So a list of words to hide the post, and another list to mark as used, but allow viewing on click through.

@Eka_FOOF_A @tess this can be done with filters already. you can set up a list of filter words to completely hide and another list to simply show a warning for

Julie Webgirl - Just Your Luck

@tess
This.

Do you know how hard it is to filter out Trump? I don't want to block oranges from my world but it almost came to that. Same with Musk. People are infinitely harder than objects because of the name calling.

Andrew

@justyourluck @tess oh god yes, there's one person I follow who occasionally posts about trump with the deeply unhelpful content warning "former guy". my dude. this is fedi. half my feed is "former guys"

Fluffy Kitty Cat

@tess yeah we don't have weird censorship like on corpo shit apps you can say normal words

C.Suthorn :prn:

@tess

But then there are words, that i would never speak in RL and never write anywhere.

Martin Vogel

@tess
At least in Fedilab, there is another problem with starred words, too.

FiveSeventeen

@tess

I do agree with you, but also recall that some have been brought up to censor their words, verbally and in writing, and this is a hard burden to shed.
