@ThePlant You're right. Everyone has the option to block domains they dislike. However, as an admin, withholding certain content from all users is not, in my opinion, the right approach and goes against the spirit of a free internet.

@vama85 THIS. This is a point I made before. Leave it up to the users, the feature is right there. Don't make the choice for the users.

@ThePlant @vama85 I mean, yeah, but the admins are paying for the instance. The fediverse is still free because if you want you can create your own instance. They people paying have the right to do what they consider best for their users.

Also, you can allow Threads users to read your instance and follow your users toots, but from Mastodon you can't get any posts from Threads. They are the ones who are blocking all the fediverse and want to absorb as many users as possible. Admins are just blocking an instance that wants to steal their data without giving absolutely anything in return.

@ellohir @vama85 they have literally only just begun their testing, it will be both ways

@ThePlant @vama85 I just don't understand why they've released it in this state. They could install a local mastodon instance to do any kind of tests before going live with the integration. This "one-way only" really damages their reputation with the rest of the instances the longer it goes on. It's exactly what people wary of them feared would happen.

@vama85

I do understand where you’re coming from but the fact that moderation is necessary wont change. We have harmful people and content out there which we keep from our users. Otherwise there would be no moderation features on mastodon, lemmy, matrix and co.

One of those harmful actors is called meta and I wont stand by while they poison the well.

@vama85 @ThePlant tbf I think we agree on principle but there is nuance - admins should be blocking directly hostile, illegal or otherwise severely badly acting instances for the protection of their own instance.

I don't see the argument that Threads fits into this though...

Liam

@mdiluz @vama85 fully agree on the first bit, but yeah, Threads really doesn't apply to that IMO

there's a difference between blocking based on illegal, hate etc to just blocking "because Meta"

@vama85 @ThePlant If the instance's users voted in favour of kicking Facebook on the shins, that's actually 100% the spirit of the open web.
