The best time to install Firefox was 15+ years ago.

The second best time is now.

@neil@mastodon.neilzone.co.uk each day is a good day...

Oh and we need to show Firefox to people before Google will disable downloading other browsers from any chromium based browsers...

Chloe Raccoon

@LexPendragon @neil @patterfloof I first installed firefox when it was called phoenix...

@neil
I followed your advice last week after abandoning it for a couple of years. Missing only PWA (yes, I know there is an extension but doesn't work on work laptop) and a completely ridiculous #Atlassian stack that just doesn't function with #firefox (also for work).

Alfabravo :manjaro:

@jeroen @neil What part of altassian does not work for you? We also use altassian cloud at work and I only use Firefox, both desktop and mobile.

Jeroen Franssen πŸ‡§πŸ‡ͺ

@alfabravoteam @neil I'm not able to search in #confluence , modify calendars, ... We also have issues with #jira. Thanks for confirming that it should work... Maybe it's our reverse proxy that is acting up... but the weird thing is that it works perfectly on chrome

Alfabravo :manjaro:

@jeroen @neil I can perform all of that even with enhanced tracking protection. Again, it's on cloud altassian.

It might be caused by something in between not playing fair with headers / cookies / metadata.

@alfabravoteam @neil Interesting. We are using the data center version because we're big on #resiliency and data ownership... I'll give this feedback to my team, thanks!

@neil Fennec Browser is the #OpenSource Version of Firefox for Android available in the #FDroid Store.

Neil Brown

@ArboristManuel Isn't Firefox the open source version of Firefox for Android?!

ArborIstManu

@neil oh sorry you're right. Fennec is the mobile version of Firefox-ESR. ESR means Extended Support Release. πŸ™ˆ

@neil I switched back to Firefox back when they launched Quantum and have never looked back. I still cannot fathom why even so many in tech continue to stick with Chrome.

Jack Beauchamp-Stansfield

@neil 15 years ago was right in the middle of its descent into bloat and poor performance, so not sure I'd agree on that side of it.

It's absolutely superb now, though.

Harry Wood

@jbstans @neil Yes I remember firefox getting hopelessly slow. I came back to it a couple of years ago. It's fine now.

Jack Beauchamp-Stansfield

@harry_wood @neil yes me too - I left in about 2008-9 for chrome, then in about 2017 started looking for non Google browsers before trying Firefox again in about 2020 and not looking back.

Bret Carmichael

@neil @briankrebs Mozilla may add lots of new users for their support of ad blockers with Manifest V3.

KBSez βœ…

@neil

Preach it! Then install Privacy Badger and HTTPS Everywhere from the @eff in Firefox!!

Ed Davies

@kbsez No need for HTTPS Everywhere any more. It's built in. Under Settings β†’ Privacy & Security:

@neil

HTTPS-Only Mode form with options for β€œEnable HTTPS-Only Mode in all windows”, ”Enable HTTPS-Only Mode in private windows only” and β€œDon't enable HTTPS-Only Mode”. With a β€œManage Exceptions…” button to the right.
Alfabravo :manjaro:

@kbsez @neil @eff The badger is a must. Most recent FF versions include an equivalent config option of HTTPS everywhere, tho.

Janne Oksanen

@neil I'm pretty sure the first time I installed it it was still called Phoenix.

@neil Still trying to figure out how to get my YouTube ad blocking extension running for Firefox for iOS

Neil Brown

@ZacBelado With difficulty, I guess, as Firefox for iOS is Safari in a different coat :(

DELETED

@neil Apple doesn't just want their own software to suck...

Jay Swan

@neil @briankrebs I stopped paying attention to Firefox around 2020 when Mozilla laid off their security team. Has their security posture (not their privacy feature set) changed for the better in the time since?

Angela Scholder

@neil Actually no idea any more when I switched to Firefox as main browser.

Joseph Dickson

@neil also, Firefox for Android / iOS is fantastic and I've been using it for years.

Mark Burton

@josephdickson @neil
The pc version is great. For Android also good but restricted add-ons so try Iceraven fork (via GitHub).

Christian

@neil Bing is the best browser. To download Firefox.
