This is a HUGE 100% battery powered tug right here in New Zealand. We went head-to-head with a dirty diesel tug in #Auckland harbour.
The planning, filming & editing took WEEKS and the finished result was epic, but sadly Twitter and Facebook's algorithms both decided it sucks and should not be seen by anyone unless I pay hundreds of dollars. 😭
Is this what the internet has become?
What do I do?

@KiwiEV

Its pay to play on social now :/

Gavin Shoebridge

@Rjdlandscapes I can't afford that. I'm not Mr Beast.
Also, I refuse to do "SHOCKED FACE" thumbnails.

RJD

@KiwiEV Yeah I get that.

I quit doing photography on facebook over it too.

RJD

@KiwiEV 25k followers, some images had over 1m reach.

nekminnut..

@Rjdlandscapes @KiwiEV this was always the plan. The more quality creators that jump ship to Fedi, the better.

@KiwiEV @Rjdlandscapes yup. it's actually from 2017, originally saw it on Xitter, and the follow up from FB (where he also posted it) is below. @oatmeal had over 4 million FB followers at the time, for reference.

@kudra @KiwiEV

I was going through the same pain at a smaller scale.

25k followers, photography wasnt really a business and I have a full time job but it just murdered any chance of that in the platform.

Hundreds of dollars per post to be seen by a fraction of followers was insane.

@Rjdlandscapes @KiwiEV if you think about it, pay for reach had always been the case for non-social media, but the bait-and-switch that FB was the most egregious in ramping up in social has always felt like a really, really nasty betrayal (though I saw it coming way ahead of the actual switch, and was so depressed that others couldn't see it).

I actually saw a graphic the other day that summed up why I always hated FB way more than the other tech giants, this is from @pluralistic 's book "The Internet Con: How to Seize the Means of Computation"

@kudra @KiwiEV @pluralistic

I know they have to earn money on the platform. Nothing is free and I would rather pay than have my data tracked and stolen

But yes this was massively egregious and on every single post, to people who have already subscribed to my content...

@Rjdlandscapes @KiwiEV this is #enshittification. It doesn't have to be this way, but people have to refuse the walled gardens / silos en masse to change things. Fortunately, the Fediverse seems to finally be gaining more sustained traction. Be the change you want to see in the world! Just say NO to Farcebook and Xitter!

@kudra What's the bull/cow symbol in the bottom left corner? Thanks!

@ukuku It's bollocks mate. I can't compete with the tidal wave of "shocked face" clickbait junk with zero substance.

@KiwiEV I would love to see the whole video. Upload it to the Internet Archive, where it will live forever (presumably). Also, what is nice, they don't takedown free videos for using copyrighted music. #BeACopyrightAbolitionist archive.org/

@elaterite It's a great watch. Lots of tech info and we explore the battery banks and motor room: youtube.com/watch?v=Rj305HdU46
