E-mail would have really had what it takes to be an alternative to letters, but no! You have to make the login so complicated and then there are thousands of providers and you have to decide on one AT THE BEGINNING...

.. and with that they have already squandered their chance. In my environment, e-mail was too complicated for most people (with the providers and then looking for e-mail addresses, etc.) Today, none of them use it anymore. Me neither. Hope for fax now.

@ErikUden just use sendmail and send mail.

@ErikUden That's why people use WhatsApp and Facebook for communicating.

This post is about Mastodon :mastodon:

@ErikUden I know. I don't think the comparison is good. You need a Google account anyway and it comes with free Mail. So you can just use that

@joshix @ErikUden Good point. The analogy holds for e-mail ca. 20 years ago. Who knows, Fedi services might come bundled with your browser, your workplace etc soon, similar to what they try in the Netherlands currently. πŸ€” surf.nl/en/mastodon-pilot-for-

@joshix @ErikUden why do you need a Google account? For what? It's convenient, yes. But need?

@joshix @ErikUden Do you mean (mainstream) Android phone owners? For iPhone and Huawei Google accounts aren't necessary, they have own accounts for app stores.

@ErikUden Actually I like it. Being non trivial to use is great filter.

This the one of few platforms where no ritch widow from Katar offered me her treasure yet...

@ErikUden I actually know a few people who refuse to communicate by E-Mail. I have to use Discord to stay in touch

@ErikUden when i got my 1st Email-Adress in 1991, it was more complicated to connect to the Internet via Compuserve - but not for the EmailπŸ˜„.

But it was a Milestone compared to FIDO-Net and BBS's...

@ErikUden So e-mail is more complicated than Mastodon or the Fediverse. And even XMPP, which is actually quite easy to use, is more complicated than the Fediverse. However, I have to say that anyone who can't cope with XMPP and the Fediverse should seriously consider whether they can survive in the modern world.

@ErikUden
Personal communication is fragmenting these days. E-mail is definitely out of fashion but it still has its uses. We managed to sell our house in the UK from Germany with mostly only email correspondence, it made things so much easier. But talking to my friends and refusing to use WhatsApp, Iβ€˜m now mainly on Signal and iMessages, still some Facebook and Facebook Messenger, sometimes even Instagram, and was wondering whether I also need Discord (to connect to my son). πŸ₯΄

@ErikUden Hah, quite.

I used to write lots of e-mails as letters. But I lost track of nearly everyone I used to be in contact with with the aggressive advance of #Facebook. I found people just didn't want to know if you weren't part of the corporate dumb club.

@ErikUden How dare people offer community and choice. I'm totally outraged too!

@ErikUden
I'm old enough to remember exactly these arguments about email :mastojoy:
And many people, including academics, never figured out how to use it properly (subject, cc/bcc etc.)
