Went to the local library and I shit you not, on the shelf of new books, next to a book about Photoshop was this one. #books #mastodon

@jalcine the fact that they accidentally made it a nonbinary pride flag is just *chef’s kiss* perfection

jacky

@ariadne literally into circulation lol

Googling "Chris Minnick" is not very encouraging

"Chris Minnick - Entrepreneur, author, teacher, winemaker - Chris Minnick is a prolific published author..."

Can you say "Climb on and Cash In"?

I sure can

@FinchHaven @jalcine Not to worry. Both authors are legit and seem to still be active on Mastodon. I've linked both their profiles below. This book was discussed quite a bit on Mastodon back when it was published. I think I recall people who checked it out saying it was a pretty good book.

Yeah...

Go look at their Posts and Replies

If posting every three or four weeks (at best) makes them experts on Mastodon, how do I get in on the gravy train?

I'm only on seven days a week

@FinchHaven @jalcine Well, at least they did something. Better than there not being a Mastodon for Dummies book, in my view, especially if it's half-decent like some reported. They were probably the best authors that the Dummies publisher had contact with who were interested in writing a book about Mastodon.

@FinchHaven @ducky @jalcine To get on the “gravy train” you find a publisher or agent, pitch a book, get them to agree to a deal, write it and then publish it

It’s not easy in the least

IMHO there's much more to authority than just posting regularly. For example accounts of public figures tend to create their own bubble values as they don't try to be part of a community.

On the other hand there are people who are deeply invested in the technical and social aspects of the platform, but don't really feel the need to publish a lot (or alternatively don't feel like they have anything worth saying).

jacky

This is my evidence that I go to the library often to notice when new books pop up lol

@jalcine ... my library has a copy and I have placed a hold, this is gonna be awful or awesome and I'm worried by the possibility that it may be both

Jason Petersen

@jalcine is that real? The text layout is insanely bad

Jason Petersen

@jalcine oh wow I looked it up and they just ran this brand into the ground. It wasn’t pretty before but the padding on the text in that circle is something even an AI would not do. Gross.

ink and yarn

@jalcine Everything about this is so ridiculous except for the catch-line on its Amazon listing, which is "A little birdy told us you needed to know more about Mastodon." 😂

@thisismissem My library has a copy and I placed a hold, will find out in a few weeks!

jacky

@thisismissem oh I didn't check it out!

Yet! Lol

@jalcine

I misread that as "John Mastodon" for a moment. 😂

@jalcine
I joined Mastodon because I thought it WAS for dummies. 🤔

andrew

@jalcine @lisamelton made me do a double take at the name until I looked it up and this was not in fact written by my brother Mike

@jalcine
Me reading Mastodon for Dummies : Oh, they have Mastodon on computers now!

Princess Beach

@jalcine most miserable looking mastodon I’ve ever seen

climate voter/bike supremacist

@jalcine So far, there are no dummies in my timeline so I have mixed feelings about this.

@jalcine
Well I guess that puts to rest the idea that Mastodon is only for experts.

spmatich :blobcoffee:

@jalcine do we want dummies? I mean there doesn't seem to be many here, I like it that way 😁

Colin Fry

@jalcine Most people who have only heard of Mastodon will pick up the book assuming two-thirds of it is about choosing a server 😃

KanaMauna

@jalcine Great, now the dummies will find us.

Lena的发疯日记

@jalcine The most difficult part of using Mastodon is choosing a service to create an account with.

Rodion Borisov

@jalcine LOL. If it needs this much explaining, it's probably bad: either Mastodon or the deep-dive?

Vicente

@jalcine gotta love that clever John Mastodon reference there

Aidan Bell

@jalcine the choice to use a photorealistic but still not great render of a real Mastodon was an interesting one, looks more like an ant eater had a baby with an elephant, and the maternity ward was in a PS2 game

nobody

@jalcine why do people need a mastodon for dummies book? mastodon is pretty easy to use.

Arnan de Gans

@jalcine ohno, here comes the moneygrab 😬

lobster

@jalcine

Does it have a good plot? Did the elephant do it? I luvs reading me … 🤓😎🦞😌

@jalcine Orrr, ich fühle mich abgeholt 🤗 🤭 haben muss 😬

@jalcine
Yesterday, got it from Kobo.
Thanks.

@jalcine So I'm guessing the photographer didn't need the one about Photoshop?

How are elephants affected by this?

The book is more than a leaflet, i am really astonished that Mr. Minnik and Mr. McCallister wrote lots of text about something which might as well go "Boink!" tomorrow. It won't, but this is not impossible.
