I’m more frequently seeing new accounts show up that are arguing for only one thing, repeatedly. Remember the large scale disinfo campaigns on Twitter made to look like real people from real places and with real lives? I think they’ve discovered #Mastodon.

So, a friendly reminder not to believe everything you read on here. Check out the person’s bio and timeline before buying their story - especially if you find yourself nodding in agreement. We can be better than Musk’s rat palace.

@KatM ive learned to ignore comments from low effort, low investment, unaged, unengaged, commodity, single topic fediverse accounts. Theyre not difficult to spot.

Kat ♾️

@darren I agree, but I’m seeing a lot more of them recently. That tells me there’s a campaign underway to sew discord here on several heated topics.

So get this... after I posted this 👆 today, I started getting followed by a bunch of accounts that launched this week and have 0 followers/0 following with 0 info on their profiles. No avatar. Just ghost accounts. 👻

Kat ♾️

@philip_cardella No kidding! I may have to secure my account for a few weeks, go through my follower list and purge suspicious accounts.

@KatM @philip_cardella I block so much more quickly than I did on the other site, and I use the “notes” option for accounts I haven’t blocked yet but am suspicious/ wary of so that if they come up again I know what the issue was previously.

Kat ♾️

@fsinn That's a really good idea, Francisca. I'm going to borrow that.

@KatM It’s a great feature. Mine are things like “argumentative, says no point in voting dems same as reps”

@philip_cardella

Kat ♾️

@fsinn Mine will likely note things like, "Know-it-all reply guy who hates to be fact-checked." ;-)

@fsinn Hahaha! Yeah, maybe I should just use an emoji that references that notation. 🗣️

@KatM What do you suppose triggered that? How odd. I've had a few of those, but since I rarely check follows, I don't get to see what set them off.

Kat ♾️

@thepoliticalcat I hashtagged Mastodon in my post. So it could be coming from bots and trolls using that hashtag.

thepoliticalcat

@KatM Oh, definitely. There are already bots and trolls running attacks over here. Nowhere near as many as Xitter, tho. You might want to block the entire server they're on. They usually seem to share a server instance.

@KatM

Probably horndogs newly off the Twitter boat. OR horny bots thrown out of the Twitter boat b/c of the EU.

@KatM

This is to be expected.

We need strategies to cope.

NorCal Lynne

@KatM I have noticed this too, they tend to be one of the first replies to a post, and their reply tends to be a horrible take, and I wonder if the intention is to discourage people from posting.

Samhain Night

@NorCal_Lynne @KatM Or to color the whole conversation around their POV, and shit the Overton window.

Amy

@samhainnight @NorCal_Lynne @KatM I don't know if this was a typo or intentional, but I rather enjoyed "shit the Overton window." 😂

Samhain Night

@KatM I've noticed this increasingly since Spring. The trolls are here.

DuncanWatson

@KatM@mastodon.social I have been seeing reply-guys on mastodon/activitypub as well. Some quite annoying.

I. E. LaBailey

@KatM@mastodon.social Damn fine advice! Also, I've been telling people that clicking "See All Replies" reveals everything you need to know , more so than an intro post.

jfml ✨ Jonas Laugs

@KatM And report and block the hell out of accounts like that ^__^

Kat ♾️

@jfml I definitely block, but I don't know what I'd report a ghost account for doing wrong.

KFClinton

@KatM

Yep, if you scroll the account back to when they joined it is almost always just one subject with a few silly posts occasionally.

Same with people who joined just to beg for money. They open up several accounts with similar names and use the same pictures and every post they make is "send me money I need it now" type posts.

Jeez Louise! Don't believe ANYTHING you read on social media. If you see a story that interests you, look for it on a reputable news site. If the story has a link on social media, don't click it unless you know that the linked source is reliable.

I believe 90% of what we read on social media is either completely false or misleading. That's why I filter out so many news topics; I learn about them directly from the news sources I trust — not from shared links to mystery sources.

@mlanger Yes, and some are created just to be inflammatory on hot topics. They create otherwise respectable looking human profiles using stock images and give them jobs and titles. After a while on Twitter they created completely ridiculous user profiles, like @name0123456789 with MAGA backgrounds and stock head shots. Turns out, they were posting from troll farms in other countries, like Russia. They convinced lots of people there was a 1950s 'retro conservative' movement brewing in the US.

Catherine is Tired

@KatM don’t believe what they say. Research what they say.

@KatM

Well you are doing better than me. I am so uninspiring I don't even follows from bots 😋😂
