 *I* find that as a pedestrian who is constantly alert and following all the rules, I still get nearly run over by oblivious and irresponsible drivers on a regular basis. Like: at an intersection, with the right of way, in broad daylight. A LOT of drivers don't fucking look where they're aiming their heavy speedy boxes of death, so I can't cross a driveway without looking over my shoulder first, or listen to music lest I miss an engine revving at me. 11 comments
I see you are too heavily invested in the myth of individual responsibility for collective problems for further discussion to be productive.  @anomnomnomaly @Cassandra @mbonsma Good try, though. 🤦🏼 @anomnomnomaly Your assumption that everyone can see/hear leaves a lot of people out. Are you going to blame them for being blind or Deaf/hard of hearing? Or should we design roads so drivers see people and stop in time? That's better for everyone as a systemic solution that doesn't rely on individual humans to be perfect every time or die. Other transportation modes have many more such safety checks and balances built in; why not driving? @Cassandra @anomnomnomaly @mbonsma i've been knocked down twice, one minor and one that resulted in an overnight hospital stay. both times it was the driver at fault. I've twice had drivers speed up and swerve to colide with me. How do i protect myself from that? cars kill pedestrians, pedestrians don't kill cars Yeah. A lot of the time that drivers nearly run me over it's because they want to make a turn but there's another car coming and they don't want to wait, so they speed up and *then* notice there's a pedestrian in the crosswalk. Obviously they would rather hit me, the pedestrian, than get him themselves by another car. @Cassandra @elizabethveldon And now I do my absolute best to look for them, cyclists, and wheelchairs. I can't imagine how scary it must be from their perspective. @corbin_lambeth @Cassandra i had a guy on easter road in edinburgh speed up at the crossing and come straight at me deliberately - its utterly terrifying. @elizabethveldon @corbin_lambeth I have also encountered drivers who think it is sport to scare the shit out of pedestrians. 😡 @Cassandra @elizabethveldon |

You're not responsible for them... you ARE responsible for yourself.
If you find it difficult to be fully aware of your surroundings and find yourself crossing driveways without looking over your shoulder... then the blame lies with you... just as it would a driver.
I drive, I walk, I ride my bicycle... I'm responsible for being aware of others and not crossing a driveway when there's a risk of colliding with something or someone.
