The rest of the world: 36 meters wide
Americans:

Headline from Jan: 2 asteroids the size of 100 pugs to pass earth Tuesday. Yes they are measuring the width in adult pugs.

@talia_christine I am pulling up my rodent conversion table

Dressed to Oppress

@talia_christine that's a standard measurement. everyone uses it

TC ๐Ÿ’–

@squeevening @DMX the most confusing part is this is their measurement for width.๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜‚

Dressed to Oppress

@talia_christine @squeevening we measure height in bags of skittles, but you gotta lay flat on the ground to do it

vieuxnez

@talia_christine

Why not just measure it in the standard microtexas?

Martha Howell

@talia_christine
I know we're bad at math, but honestly, figuring out the width of 100 pugs strains my brain more than "a generous 36 yards."

Vicente

@talia_christine So lazy. They should know that the proper scientific measurement in the US is 10.3 Volkswagen Beetles.

Davie Duck

@aglisson @talia_christine I remember the โ€œstop metric madnessโ€ campaign when I was, ahem, a bit younger.

Andrew Glisson

@WackyIdeas @talia_christine Seems like a completely different planet, looking back.

@allenstenhaus this was legitimate science news! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

@talia_christine I have no doubt it's legitimate. But I try to think about the motivations behind using such headlines given how commonplace it is. The only thing that makes sense to me is it gets people to click or share because of the ridiculous headline leading to more people viewing the content & the publication bringing in more revenue.

Sure, it's not a clickbait headline in that it's untrue, but it's designed in such a way to significantly draw attention for what I see as garbage reasons.

But, 100 pugs is a bigger attention getter than using a traditional measurement.

Now I want to watch 100 pugs playing in a park.

@talia_christine I'm going to be thinking about pugs the rest of the night, & I'm not even mad about it.

Pseudo Nym

@talia_christine

Americans will really go to any lengths (or widths or heights) to avoid using the metric system, won't we?

Layla Low

@pseudonym @talia_christine There was a big push to change to metric during the Carter administration and it made some progress. I remember road speed limit signs having both.

Reagan quashed it. I recall when NASA crashed a Mars lander, I think it was, because somebody forgot to make a conversion.

Metric is so easy but Americans cling to the clunky system because how dare anyone inconvenience them with change, even if it would be an improvement.

TC ๐Ÿ’–

@nesmb @pseudonym honestly it's way easier to understand plus it's necessary if you ever plan to visit literally any other place.

Samhain Night 4 Harris

@talia_christine @nesmb @pseudonym Yes, but the conversions were a pain in the ass to learn.

In the American system:

100 pugs = about the size of 10,000 Maniacs.

@talia_christine

This should give you a fairly good idea of what the asteroids are like. (in the US)

BunRab

@talia_christine
I liked the 1000 capybaras one, myself.

SallyTAB

@talia_christine I do believe you mean 100 โ€œFreedom Pugsโ€.

laurent

@talia_christine are you *sure* they meant adult pugs? Could also be baby pugs.

Doug Baker

@talia_christine Whatโ€™s that in football fields or Olympic swimming pools? Or Volkswagens?

Peter

@futzle I'm assuming the pug will not be travelling at 16km/sec when I attempt to fight it.

Peter

@futzle (also, I looked up the source for that headline to find out how fast the asteroid was going when it whizzed by us, and the whole thing is extraordinary m.jpost.com/science/article-72 )

Jargoggles

@talia_christine
But how did all those pugs get into space?

Ben Todd

@talia_christine

Wait, are the two asteroids 100 pugs big together or 100 pugs each. That headline is confusing.

TC ๐Ÿ’–

@monkeyben each... yes I looked it up.๐Ÿ˜’๐Ÿ˜‚

Mark Armstrong

@talia_christine are these pigs nose to tail or stacked side by side? I donโ€™t think this new sizing system compares favourably to the standard cubit.

Grum999 :verified:

@talia_christine pugs??
๐Ÿค”
on an another side, their customary units is too complicated and I can understand them, trying to find more visual reference :ablobcatcoffee:

@talia_christine thatโ€™s a choice. Not one that helps me understand the size or scale of a meteor. But it is a choice.

Jenkins

@talia_christine How many London buses though? That's the UK post-Brexit standard measure for such bodies.

Alan Campbell For Harris

@talia_christine funnily enough, I commented on a tech article today about these new TSMC fabs in the US. The area involved was measured in football fields. Football fields? Wtf is a football field? It makes as much sense as measuring satellites using elephants.

Brian Stafford

@talia_christine In the UK the standard unit of volume is a washing machine.

Deniz Opal

@talia_christine

This is from the Jerusalem Post.

They always do this.

It is so that people post the article on social media tagging it "Mericans amiright??"

And it always works!! ๐Ÿคฃ
