@davidrevoy Yeah, and there are still people trying to scam you with that bs on Insta ... 🤷‍♀️

David Revoy

@jfml Oh yes, with titles like that in the press, I guess everyone will try to sell it for a little something, but I guess it is too late. I can't imagine anyone buying them back.

Chadee the Dream Witch 🌕 🌊

@davidrevoy I think they were always worthless except as a scam.

The first few big sales numbers were actually people shilling by buying from themselves with absurd prices to make the market look hot. But that money just went from and to accounts owned by the same NFT makers.

It was always a scam.

@tennoseremel lol 😆

Another meme I have on my computer relevant for today 🤣 :

#SquidGame #meme #nft

Reiddragon :ablobcatattention:
@davidrevoy whaaaa????? a speculative bubble finally bursting?????? no fucking way!!!!!!!!! who could have seen that coming!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
raphael

@davidrevoy in less memeing matters: it’s really dispiriting that there are still people who fully believe in that nonsense.

i often watch dave ‘japaneseprintmaking’ bull on twitch. he runs a shop making and selling japanese woodblock prints, and streams the process. transfering, carving, checking proof prints, and so on. every so often, you see someone in chat raving how cool it would be if these were NFTs, the ultimate marriage of tradition and the future.

@gekitsu True. (and sad)

I guess for a big audience the digital world became so complex to understand that they can be manipulated by gurus about it. Nfts, Ai, are cult; it works as long as there is investor/believers, imo.

It feels similar in a way to the new age and esoterism market. With a lot of Bs, gurus, and money money money to buy hope, or to exploit ignorance.😔

raphael

@davidrevoy yeah, and i guess it doesn’t help that we have a lot of ‘new hot’ things with barely any depth to the reporting, that get burned out and replaced real quick. it works for hype as well as for scandal.

nev

@gekitsu @davidrevoy there's a few creators I know of where I'm actually kind of okay with them hawking NFTs…

…because they're based in Russia and they are using cryptocurrency the way it was meant to be used, to evade international sanctions and regulations

raphael

@nev @davidrevoy yes, that’s a great point! naomi wu selling a body scan NFT would also fall under thaht umbrella. and, naomi being naomi, she had some choice words when folks tried to lump her NFT sale together with affluent randos burning money and resources for some pumped up dream of ‘to the moon’

GunChleoc

@davidrevoy Funnily enough, the German meme for that is from a French movie

invidious.tiekoetter.com/watch

Nein! Doch! Oh!

David Revoy

@gunchleoc 😍 Oh, Louis de Funès !
The tone of voice for the audio dub is perfect and impressive on this sample. It feels like de Funès recorded it himself.

OrbitalMartian

@davidrevoy this was definitely not something everyone saw coming (except from the people who bought or made/stole them XD)

@davidrevoy

NFTs are an unfortunate victim of the crypto-scam world.

They actually *could* have been a fun way for individuals to support their favorite digital artists. If you want to support a painter, you can buy an original painting by that artist. If you want to support a digital artist you can buy a print copy (one of hundreds), but that's a lot less fun than buying an "original". An NFT was kind of a way to say you bought the "original" and not just a copy.

Then of course the crypto-bros had to go and ruin it all.

Angry Centrist

@1dalm @davidrevoy One could as easily tell oneself that the #1 signed/numbered physical print from the creator was "The Original." Except as sort of a nebulous original idea, NFTs have always been a boondoggle. By the time the first bored ape hit the hype machine it was a weird joke. I'm all for supporting actual creators (not bored-ape-meme stuff) and maybe something like a thank-you card or an invitation to a gallery show is enough of a perk or memento.

eyrea

@1dalm @davidrevoy Except for the golden rule of digital: all copies are identical to the original.

Digital art (unless in a very specific context) is always already mass produced. It can never be like a painting or a sketch.

This is not necessarily a bad thing, but it is a thing.

@davidrevoy Stamp collecting would have been a better bet.

@davidrevoy non-fungible tokens after becoming non-fungible for anything

Jens

@davidrevoy noooOOOOooo my really smart investment in receipts for things that didnt exist!!!????

But the capitalist market said it would live forever?!

@davidrevoy
I'm actually shocked that there's still *some* that have any value, why and how?
