The problem is that the current design is biased against alt-text entry in that it puts barriers in the way. By having the cursor placed in the alt-text entry box as soon as the image is posted, the new default is neutral: the user can choose to enter alt-text or not. With the old implementation, often the choice is not made because the interface hides the opportunity for the choice. @Leisureguy @Gargron That sound like a client problem. What they just releases is the server edition I believe. I useMastodon using my browser. I assumed that the basic structure of the web interface came from Gargron, with the individual instance able to customize it to some degree (e.g., maximum post length). That, I assumed, was why the overall web interface was much the same from instance to instance. My suggestion was aimed at the web interface template that the instances receive. Perhaps my mental picture of this is wrong. I'm apparently going to need to add ElasticSearch to get the most anticipated new feature, right? cc @mastohost @wjmaggos Yes, if you want to perform full text search on your server. But even without ElasticSearch users can opt in to have their posts index in search but it will simply not work locally. @mastohost Looks like Iβll be adding ElasticSearch to my personal instance then. Would you also recommend increasing from βMoonβ? @karim @mastohost I has to increase my RAM form 4 to 8 GB for elasticsearch. Fortunately, the system's out of memory manager killed it when I hadn't done the RAM increase so it didn't take the instance down. @karim Well, ElasticSearch runs on independent resources, so it will make no difference for ElasticSearch if you are using Moon or another plan. @Gargron I sure hope you have fixed the curtains of "speed limit" notifications I've been getting on 2 different servers AND an app! @stux fixed it on Masto.ai - BLESS HIM! Really annoying when you have been AFK for hours and the curtain of "Speed limit" notifications starts up in the left-hand column even if you haven't touched your keboard other than to enter the password for the computer. @cultdev Nothing, it's up to your server to do the upgrade. Since you're on mastodon.social I'm sure you'll get it straight away! @cultdev There are some things you won't see because they're visual changes to the web interface; but things like search and higher quality images will be available through apps without any upgrades. @Gargron congratulations! Is there anything on-the-wire that needs to be documented for other ActivityPub implementers? @evan The discoverable attribute in AP will be used for the new search feature. https://docs.joinmastodon.org/spec/activitypub/#discoverable @Gargron I'm excited with #Mastodon 4.2 as much as I'm excited with #Godot #GodotEngine 4.2 π€£ @Distante@mastodon.social @Gargron@mastodon.social On Firefish i have the option and never use it. I also thought, that i need it. I don't. And i am sure, that counts for many others as well. @Gargron Finished this just in time! :vibing: https://shlee.fedipress.au/2023/mastodon-4-2-0-post-toots-everybody/ @Gargron Is ElasticSearch going to be required from this version or is search still an optional feature for instances? @jan Perfect! That means I can do the upgrade today and worry about getting search configured when I have more time to focus on it π @MsDropbear84 @Gargron @shlee @AusSocialMods I believe the better option would be "shared, but moderated" `emojo relay` - similar to twitch's ecosytem having a common shared location people can upload emotes... then admins could just subscribe to those lists https://betterttv.com/emotes/global @aussocialadmin @MsDropbear84 @Gargron @shlee @AusSocialMods Admins already can import emojis from other instances. I use Linux myself, but I run an instance that's not aimed at nerds, so adding in all this Linux-related stuff wouldn't mean anything to them and just clutter the Emoji UI. @gunchleoc @aussocialadmin @Gargron @shlee @AusSocialMods >Admins already can import emojis from other instances Oh? Well, in that case, fwiw to the others here [given i'm merely a user & can't do it myself ofc], tech.lgbt has all these #FOSS #emojis, tilde.zone has most of them, & iirc fosstodon.org has at least some of them. @MsDropbear84 @aussocialadmin @Gargron @shlee @AusSocialMods You should only request emojis for an instance that you're on yourself. Servery already import them automatically for display - it's just the capability to use them yourself on the posting box that needs manual work by the admins.
