I spent my late teens and early adult years dreaming of creating a startup, getting funding and all that

Fast forward to the present, I no longer strive for fame and fortune, and ironically, VCs keep reaching out about @pixelfed

Dreams can change

@pixelfed It feels amazing to do this on my own terms, without VC funding or compromising on my vision, thank you #fedi for keeping me hungry and focused ❤️

@pixelfed I will admit some of them "just wanted to learn more about the fediverse" and I was really tempted to engage, but after the whole Meta NDA mess I caused, I figured it's best if I just ignore all of them

"I Didn't Come This Far, Just to Come This Far and Not Be Happy."

I'm not sure I could live with myself if I took on VC funding, no amount of money could buy this - monetization and data collection would make it just as bad as IG, I never started this to become them, let's do it right

@dansup @pixelfed Those people are sugar-coated flesh eating amoebas. They will eat you alive. Run.

@dansup @pixelfed You have my heartfelt thank you. Can't be said enough, and I hope it helps keep you motivated if things are a bit of a slog. 🙏

The thing about VC funding is that however it starts out, it is guaranteed to end badly. The goals of the creator are to make a great product and a healthy business. The goals of the VC are to put in some money, pump the hell out of their investment, and exit with more money within three to five years. To hell with the business.

If you care about what you are creating this process will leave you miserable and broken, which is a very good reason to avoid it like the plague.

@dansup Thank you for writing this.

To me, #fedi is the community that I need to show me that ignoring the SV/VC ecosystem is not only possible, but the better way to do things.

@dansup @pixelfed You should tell the venture capitalist who want to invest in #Pixelfed that they are always welcome to make a donation. 😉

Maybe a “for every dollar you donate you get a second of my time” deal. 😆

@dansup @pixelfed Bootstrapping is hard but way better than being a VC slave.

@dansup @pixelfed If you’re not gonna monetize the project, how do they expect to get any returns?

@dansup @pixelfed VC is like a music recording contract. It is a mortgage where the bank owns the house even after the loan is paid off. And they can kick you out.

DELETED

@dansup @pixelfed most of the time you don’t want or need their money. They are usually jerks. Do it yourself if you can. Raising venture capital is not as great as it sounds.

@dansup @pixelfed When you no longer own yourself things change, usually not for the better. Avoid vulture capitalists when you can.

@dansup @pixelfed You are the boss, you make the decisions, and you live with the results - good or bad. As soon as you take money from someone, you now have a boss. I was too ornery to have a boss so this is the path I took in my programming career. A lot of work and learning many skills besides programming but a ton of fun and ultimately rewarding. Having seen lots of VC funded companies I know I chose a better path for me. You do great work - enjoy your path!
