I've seen people hide their non-english posts on fedi with CWs for some reason and it boggles my mind 🥴

Why do they do it? Don't be ashamed of your language. Fedi is not an English-exclusive space. It's a place for all cultures and languages. Many instances have translation APIs for a reason.

@endali meanwhile there's a language selector (and posts can be filtered by language too), but no one uses it

@alice @endali I use it and as a polyglot it is immensely useful. :capylovesyou:

@alice This is the thing I'm more concerned about. I have English language set on my profile so only English posts should appear in my feed, but I see several languages every day because no one properly selects their language.

@endali Does any non-Mastodon software have the language feature yet? I guess it'd make sense if there's no way to filter out languages you don't speak and your instance doesn't support translation

@endali because some people tend to get mad when non-English languages are used on fedi
it's stupid but it is what it is and i really only use german for things that imo someone who doesn't understand german would not care about in the slightest (e.g. german politics, jokes, other topics about germany) or when answering to posts in german

Cairo Braga

@7331 @endali let them stay mad, then. it's also a great filter for people I don't want anything to do with, capisce?

@endali@tech.lgbt I sometimes do it because there is another topic attached to it, like politics. Not because I want to hide the language but to tell in advance this might be a tiring/difficult topic.

But you’re absolutely right otherwise. If nothing else, that’s what google translate is for, after all. You even might learn something cool about another language.

@endali
Mitä ihmettä, en kyllä itse tekisi sillä tavalla

Inex Code

@endali also, Mastodon allows you to select languages for your subscription.

@endali I sometimes do this and it has nothing to do with shame.

If I post in Polish (which happens rarely), it is usually targetted at Polish-speaking folks and virtually useless to everybody else. Of course, if you're one of my non-Polish friends you're welcome to translate my posts. But once you do, you may learn I'm complaining about something related to our country, politics or anything else hyper-local you may not be interested in. CW at least reclaims some space in your feed.

@agturcz @endali
1. I set language on my posts but others don't and I still get some content in languages outside of my filter list. As a result, I don't consider current implementation of language filtering on Mastodon useful. And my unproven hypothesis is that I'm not the only one.

2. I often get lost in Mastodon preferences section while trying to find a setting I'd like to configure. For this exact reason I have strong suspicion many people may not know language filtering is even an option.

@lukem @endali So, we have two problems here.

1. Poor UX design of Mastodon (and, possibly, its clients).
and partially being a result of it:
2. People are not aware about the functionality of the tool they are using.

Using CW for non-default-language is not a solution for any of them.

@agturcz Possible. But Mastodon has enough culture and UX problems for me not to care about one particular case for using / not using CW (especially a very niche one in my book). @endali

hacknorris

@endali i just don't feel good living in my country as its one of main topics to make memes and joke about. Tbh - i solved it easier - i have few alts over few instances where its my only account in english and the rest is totally from my country where i never use english…

Milonga fina
@endali I sometimes do this as a joke but also I don't trust the translation to be accurate or I don''t think the post would make sense at all without The Cultural Context so I just say "hey hey, don't waste your time buddy"
DELETED

@endali I don't trust the language APIs, I often mix and boil together languages on my personal account. (Plus it's only Mastodon and Misskey with translation APIs, and iirc Mastodon uses GTranslate, which is not known for accuratcy.)

gavinisdie :troll:

@endali i haven't seen that before, I just see English posts and non CWed posts from other languages

DELETED

@endali im actuslly always happy to see other languages posted, i do miss the translation btn from dot social but i guess it wasnt the most accurate thing in the world

Tattooed_Mummy

@endali seems a tad odd as you can filter by language anyway

Simon Müller :sparkles_trans:

@endali Not only do many instances offer translation, but there is also the „language“ setting for every post

:jan: Deni

@endali also you can set the post language per post when you toot, and people can configure their feeds to only show toots in the language they want. Everyone wins #FediTips

jan Wilejan

@janDeni@toki.social @endali@tech.lgbt Unfortunately, that seems to be a mastodon-only feature. It seems misskey/firefish don't let you mark the language of a post or let you follow posts in a given language.

DELETED

@endali I agree, they shouldn't have to hide.

You may have missed it, but there was a whole issue a week or so ago about certain instances limiting language usage to English only. There was even a troll who admitted he reports everything, including french and spanish phrases like "c'est la vie" and "buenos dias" that English speakers generally understand.

It came out that it wasn't because they can't find anyone who will moderate in other languages, they just don't want to.

roundcrisis

@endali very likely because they have been shamed for their other language enough times.

alfonso adriasola

@endali it happens because other users complained about it. no one comes here with built in fedi compliance behaviors
