 @jeffowski People don't get more conservative as they age, they get more conservative as they become wealthier.  Mmm... Not always. I'm way, way more liberal than I was as a penniless young adult. Part of that is because society in general has become more liberal during my lifetime, and part is because I fell in with good people. If I'd been groomed by right-wingers when I was young and ignorant, the consequences don't bear thinking about. @LordCaramac @jeffowski sort of, except it's not about individual people's views changing, it's that poor people die younger so rich conservatives are more likely to get to live to be old  @LordCaramac @jeffowski I grew up somewhat poor, I am comfortably middle class now, and I think the rich should be tried for crimes against humanity. @jeffowski these are two independent statements. There is a more conservative approach/mentality. "It's a natural process as you become older and wiser" sounds much better than "right wing policies suit me now so I'm voting for them even though I benefited from more left wing ones in my youth"  I want to agree, but oligarchs are stringy, dry and smell off. Tax them robustly, enthusiastically, urgently, with vigor, there's the sauce. Eisenhower taxed at 90% on some, asked by a business paper why a Republican continued Roosevelt's taxes, Ike answered, "I tax lazy money." Left middle and right voters ALL SUPPORT taxing Wealth, taxing ludicrous salaries, its popular. I've watched my parents turn so hard right that they now repeat GOP propaganda verbatim and don't even know they're doing it. I had one person who was a friend for something like 10 years become so far right I couldn't stand listening to them hate every single thing any Democrat ever does anymore and just had to leave. Another friend took a similar turn, even voting for trump instead of against Democrats in this most recent election. @jeffowski Like obviously it depends on a lot of factors of which age is probably not actually one, but there does seem to be a strange tendency among many that way. These people I mentioned were all once a long time ago incredibly open. Now they are not just closed but dragged a dresser against the door and boarded up the windows. |
