Bunny ears of peace 🐰 ✌️

That won’t save you Hakazi, but nice try.

Hakazi holding his hands behind his head. Someone out of frame is screaming “Hands up!” And Hakazi, grinning mischievously, replies “bunny ears ok?” Wiggling the two fingers that act as bunny ears which also doubles as a peace sign.

Squished up faces are fun to draw. I need to create more opportunities for drawing squished up faces.

Hakazi and Seir are old friends, but they don’t see eye to eye on much nowadays.

Seir is holding Hakazi off the floor in a tight hug, squishing his face against his shoulder. Hakazi looks annoyed, “Jak’s got a big mouth... whatever happened to patient confidentiality?” Seir is grinning, “M’afraid he draws the line at ‘terrorist’, and also I pay his salary.”
A close up of Hakazi’s squished up face against Seir’s shoulder, he appears even more annoyed, “starting to think that coming here was a shit idea.” Seir, out of frame, replies “You’ll change your tune once you see your room.” Hakazi then says, “you can’t buy me off Seir.”

My more recent character, Rye. She has a cabin in the woods where she sculpts all day.

First time I draw a character with prominent lips. It’s funny that the day I first drew this Devine had also drawn lips on a character for the first time lolol... wasn’t planned. We were both into drawing lips that day.

A pencil sketch of a character with short hair and a baseball cap.

Some of today’s sketches~ some bits from a fight between a hella buff/big security guard and Hakazi + Dae.

Visible is the cap from a ink pen which helps extend the tiny 2B pen I’ve got (don’t have anything else aboard that works as a makeshift extender, in any case better than nothing).

An open sketchbook with drawings on the left hand page. Shots of a fighting sequence between an armed security guard, Dae and Hakazi.

Some scanned and lightly processed pencil drawings. Sharing the whole page would spoil a whole lot, so here's a partial view.

Hakazi is stuck. He doesn't like being stuck.

Two frames of a comic. The first features the security guard holding Hakazi by the front of his coat, Hakazi is banging on his arm to try to get him to let go but it doesnt work because the guy is too damn big. Hakazi screams, "The fuck! Were you grown in a lab?!"
The second features the guard looking afraid, staring at something out of frame, lighting it with a flashlight and saying "I... I dont believe it." Hakazi is visible almost out of frame and giving him the finger while shouting "Believe THIS asshole!"

@rek Looks great and like something I'd very much like to read 😃 Will this be available in the 100r store when it's finished?

R E K

@jkossen someday, maybe :). I'm still playing with the characters and story at the moment.

Jummit

@rek Honestly, I like this style of linework a lot. When I tried scanning pencil drawings I can never get it to look good. Care to share more details about the workflow?

R E K

@Jummit you mean that it comes out messy, or? I’m a pretty messy drawer, so I usually have a bit of cleanup to do.
Which involves playing with levels in Gimp to darken lines & lighten whites, then for persistent messes I add a new layer and set it to ‘overlay’ then draw over with white, leaving the darker important lines untouched.
Anyway not sure this is what you were looking for :>

Jummit

@rek Yeah, sorry for not being more specific (I don't really know why my results aren't as good so I don't know the unknowns), but I will try to play with the levels and do some touch ups.
I have a feeling that I didn't set the scanner quality as high as it could and that's why I got some artifacts, so that's another thing to check.
Thanks for the tips and inspiration nonetheless, and I'd love to see more details of the process!

R E K replied to Jummit

@Jummit yea depends what you start with (how clean it is), scanner settings, etc :).
My scanner settings could be a lot better, I could probably get better, cleaner results. I’m just lazy ^_^;;...

Sometimes... it feels like I’m animating XD!

I’ve already shared a bunch of these, but it’s funny to see them all together (the ‘smiling-but-worried’ one is new tho).

Guard dude looking scared
Guard dude looking excited but also devious.
Guard dude pleased as punch, grinning and looking at something with a flashlight
Guard dude grinning but generally looking very worried

“What a monster looks like depends on who you ask.”

Indeed, some monsters wear suits and ties.

Dae speaking to a concerned-looking Hakazi, “what a monster looks like depends on who you ask.”

I've been struggling with this particular sequence for a long while because the scene takes place at night, and I wasn't sure how to make it look good. I've been on/off it for weeks, mostly cause I was frustrated, but also cause we've been moving the boat a lot.

I think I've finally found something I like :>.

Hakazi and Dae see well in the dark, but the guard doesn't (uses a flashlight to see).

a page from the comic Hakum, featuring a scene where a guard is fighting Dae and Hakazi in the dark.

Time for The Great Squishing :blobhaj_reach:

Hakazi is pinned to the ground with Dae, looking angry, laying partway on his back, banging his fist against Hakazi’s squished up head.

Think I’m getting better at drawing my OCs getting the stuffing kicked out of them.

Not sure they’re glad of it though.

Hakazi getting palmed hard in the head, and not having a very good time overall.
R E K replied to R E K

Forever experimenting with this project.
I’m looking to do less on the computer, so I’ve abandoned the idea of shading digitally, and am trying to do it by hand with pencils. So far so good?

A hand holding a pencil-shaded comic page, featuring characters interacting in the dark with the environment lit by a single flashlight.

@rek yes, so cute! everyone is so emotive!

R E K replied to ✨jes✨

@j3s drawing characters emoting is my very favorite thing about drawing :>...

margot replied to R E K

@rek this is sooooo good!! are you spray fixing it to make sure it doesn't smudge, or is that less of a problem with the pencils you're using?

R E K replied to margot

@emaytch oh no my pencils smudge like crazy, i may use a fixer to help preserve them :>.

@rek This is fantastic! 👀👀

@helveticablanc thx ^________^. Am pleased with the result!
