@catsalad I gotta power up the switch hang on

Thierry ⏚

@catsalad @urda

Pffff... It's PLC !

Or maybe PLC over POE. Or POE over PLC.

Just have to try.

Mark Hall

@urda @catsalad That looks like a rapid-deployment firewall, as designed by the BOFH. Guaranteed to stop any malicious traffic from coming through the equipment where it is installed.

js

@urda @catsalad Ah, this “power over Ethernet” everybody keeps talking about.

Ģirts

@catsalad Sorry, but is there a dislike button to push frantically? Not a network engineer, just a guy whose job is to know some things ;((

DELETED

@catsalad i should get one just for shits and giggles.

Jeremy Mill :oh_no_bubble: :verified:

@catsalad kinda makes me wonder if you could make a real one with a really small micro

Topher 🌱🐧💚

@catsalad

I have strong suspicions you're personally responsible for this one...

CatSalad🐈🥗 (D.Burch) :blobcatrainbow:

@topher Not this picture, but I have indeed made this exact "device". 🛜

Typositoire

@catsalad The only thing I can think when seeing this is this

Scott Williams 🐧

@typositoire @catsalad Someone's also about to find out what happens when you run 220 through a device meant for 110 😬.

Jeff Grigg

@typositoire @catsalad

What kind of crazy perversion of a wall plug is that thing on the wall?!?

Do those actually exist in reality?

.

In the US-style, with two flats and a round, it's important that both the round one and the flat one on the "left" be ground!

Typositoire

@aiefel My brain hurt... For a second I was like, this is just an extension cord then I saw it had 2 male ends 😬

Jen Zarzycka

@typositoire @aiefel people make them to easily connect their generator to their house.

Apart from the obvious shock hazard, the real problem is it bypasses their circuit breaker, so the generator's full 30+ amps can go through house wiring rated for < 15 amps. Fire ensues during a blackout.

Meow :verified:

@catsalad Oh it is. I have a teeny USB one that works gangbusters. But I wired my house.

Dave Spector

@Cjust @catsalad it’s never to early to find that perfect gift for the network Domme in your life…

ticho

@Cjust @catsalad This gives a whole new meaning to the "master/slave" terminology. 😅

Billy O'Neal

@catsalad If you make the thing plugged in a DHCP server then they actually hate that simple trick

Gilberto Ficara

@catsalad how do you find which card talks to which switch port if you're not labeling your antennas??
😂

Maddie Mostly

@catsalad@infosec.exchange Your right. I hate this. Noah, get the boat, we're starting over.

(actually it may not be that bad if it works)

phryk 🏴

@catsalad The realization that this might actually work with just a dumb amplifier leaves me horrified beyond measure.

Stefano Marinelli

@catsalad You're a genius! You've brilliantly solved all the issues related to Wifi drivers on Linux and BSD!

Bjornsdottirs

@catsalad Yeah, because it doesn't work and at best massively confuses your phy.

E_Nonymouse

@catsalad This seems like one of those blinker fluid memes..

Mark doubleu

@catsalad

Should I upgrade from the old dependable wireless ethernet cable?

Mikered

@catsalad at one company I worked they called all ethernet "WiFi wires" or WiFi plugs 😬

Jonathan Lamothe
@catsalad
Edit: I just realized someone else posted the exact same photo.
Ben Toh

@catsalad now I miss @NanoRaptor 🙁 not even sure when and why they have left 😕

CauseOfBSOD :fediverse:

@catsalad@infosec.exchange Could you PLEASE repair the clip on the Ethernet plug? I hate it when my Ethernet falls out.

Alex@rtnVFRmedia Suffolk UK

@catsalad broadcast and RF engineers will hate it even more; if that is connected in any way it will just create RFI for a good few metres around...

Mrs Mouse :verified: :queer:

@catsalad omg. plug that in and wait for a coworker to find it looool
I know which coworker will find it too hmmmm

Earthshine

@catsalad I kind of want to build a PoE wireless network bridge inside a package like that just to fuck with people.

Steffi

@catsalad Oh so true. Just take a WiFi antenna, screw it on a cut off lan cable, and hand it to someone at work. Then make them call tech support to fix it.

They WILL hate you.

(The resulting hate will vary depending on how much of a Karen you pick. Your mileage may vary)

Jonah

@catsalad Putting the Ether back into Ethernet.
