@hacknorris @nixcraft
The final "s" in "parameters" did not have a dash under it, so she put in a patch that added one more dash.

hacknorris

@riderexmachina i know but anyway… 4 year old knows how to read…

@hacknorris
My brother could read at 2. It's not common, but it happens

Weasel

@riderexmachina @hacknorris
My kindergarten teachers were annoyed with my mother because I could already read when I got there.

Zekovski

@hacknorris @riderexmachina
I reckon you do not need to be able to read to notice this.

hacknorris

@Zekovski @riderexmachina she literally said that "s" letter is sad, so well…

Zekovski

@hacknorris @riderexmachina
You can know the alphabet letters even though you can't read.

meejah

@Zekovski @hacknorris @riderexmachina Looks like she's already getting an early education in "well-actually" unfortunately

Pit

@hacknorris @Zekovski @riderexmachina I'm pretty sure the content in square brackets was added by the aunt for clarity, indicating that the child didn't necessarily know it was an "s"

@hacknorris @riderexmachina my son was reading at 3. He would correct the captions on the TV saying things like: “They got it wrong! He didn’t say ______, he said ______.”

As anyone who regularly uses captions for movies knows, they often skip words, abridge dialogue, and paraphrase ideas when writing the captions. It’s especially fun with dubbed foreign films because the caption writer seemingly works from an entirely separate translation than the screen writer.

Shauna GM

@hacknorris @riderexmachina My sister was reading at 3. It's rare, but kids can read that young.

Kris Hyre

@nixCraft will she be attending the CRB to discuss this?

Conor Nash

@hmhackmaster @nixCraft thank you, this makes the change so much clearer

making a racket

@hmhackmaster Judging from the dates this four year old contributor is now a teenager, or will be by the end of the year if she's not already. I wonder if she's expressed any further interest in tech!

Michael Potts (HMHackMaster)

@thorybo Oh dang you make a good point! I read the date but totally didn’t do the math, I wonder what’s up with them…

@nixCraft

Lev Petrovitch

@nixCraft

If she ever get into programming this would make for an awesome resume line 😂

Marc Haber

@levpetrovitch @nixCraft "had first patch accepted to the Linux kernel at the age of 4"?

Spuds

@levpetrovitch @nixCraft when you can say, at age 18, that you have 14 years experience of kernal development....

Mekuso

@nixCraft Most wholesome commit I've seen in a while

Fernando M. S. 🇵🇸

@nixCraft your faith in mankind has just been refueled. 😄

RevK :verified_r:

@nixCraft now that is proper “open” source, well done.

karttu

@nixCraft Alt text says "help from her aunt". Tero Roponen is more likely her uncle. Nevertheless, well done Maisa!

Elosha

@nixCraft Now she‘s part of the Linux project – how many people can claim that 😸

François Houste

@nixCraft
Ce qui est de loin la plus belle histoire que j'aurai lue aujourd'hui. :-)

Trit’

@fhouste @nixCraft C’était il y a bientôt 9 ans, mais c’est adorable ! 😍

It was almost 9 years ago, but it’s adorable! 😍

Gary T. Giesen

@nixCraft Thank you for highlighting my failures as a father to 4 and 5 year old girls 😀

@nixCraft Twenty years later, Maisa writes the patch that prevents the Singularity

@nixCraft@mastodon.social Image 1: A Markdown-formatted file. One line reads '1.9 Ext4 file system parameters' and has a series of hyphens below to make it a header. The hyphens cut off just before the final 's' in the previous line.

Image 2: Mailing list discussion of a Linux kernel patch. Commit notes from Maisa Roponen: "That letter [the last s] is sad because all the others have those things [=] below them and it does not." This patch fixes the tragedy so all the letters can be happy again.

Reply: Please inform your niece that the patch has been applied and the lonely "s" need pine away no longer.

@nixCraft This is the magic of free and open source software that we in the FOSS community love to see. :blobfoxfloofcute:

:awesome: Leo :mastodon:🇲🇽

Best #Linux kernel patch you will see in your life :blobcatheart:

@nixCraft

David Zaslavsky

@nixCraft I especially love that Tero took the approach of "you can do this yourself" rather than "I'll do it for you"... Not that there's anything wrong with the latter, but it was an excellent opportunity to teach the lesson that #opensource is (or, should be) truly open for all sorts of people to contribute to, and I like that the opportunity did not go to waste.

ArdentArchivist

@nixCraft

Bloody love it. Somebody send her a t-shirt; you’re never too young to start collecting nerdgear!

erroddy

@nixCraft these are the people that are 24 and have 20 years of experience lol

ElBe

@nixCraft I wish I was able to do that at that age...

collappsar
@nixCraft LinkedIn page reads "Linux Kernel contributor."
CuriousMatter

@nixCraft I wish some of the devs on my team would comment their changes this well. Instead I see "<filename> updated." Yes, clearly that file was updated. But tell me which parts are happier now!

Erik Beck

@nixCraft Very cool! A cross of lol and misty eyes here.

Al

@nixCraft
that girl is going places in the world. good job.

remaster

@nixCraft@mastodon.social that girl now have 13-ish years :otachan_drinking: hope she is still doing something compute related!

Ian

@nixCraft The first of many in a long career as a kernel dev I hope

Jigme Datse

@nixCraft Honestly... That's an awesome patch. That kid is going somewhere (as long as that kid is supported).

Kroc Camen

@nixCraft Gotta fill out that GitHub commit graph; if your graph ain’t green by the time you’re sixteen nobody is going to employee you ;)

Sokatra

@nixCraft Very nice story ;) I hope the last s will not be sad anymore.

Timothy Wolodzko

@nixCraft Kids those days start contribution to open source so early...

Dewey Nolastname

@nixCraft je ne peux m'empêcher de constater qu'avant la réponse à cette belle nouvelle, il y avait tout pile 42 réponses... Hasard ? Coïncidence ? Je ne crois pas... 😅

Riley S. Faelan

@nixCraft: Thus, Linux has not only achieved compliance with Item #12 of the Evil Overlord List, but even exceeded the standard by 20%.

Meredith

@nixCraft I need an update, Maisa is almost a teenager now!

El Pamplina 🇺🇦 🇵🇸 :cadiz:

@nixCraft
@FBelaza All those - signs should be free to compound their own options. 😁

Ghastly Ghost

@nixCraft And here I am spending a minute deciphering what it was all about.

This girl has a bright future. :)

DELETED

@nixCraft in other news, developer submits patch as 4-year-old girl in the hopes of getting authorship on the kernel. 😉

DELETED

@nixCraft This is the sort of patch that an adult would be too lazy to fix 😄

certainlytwice

@nixCraft 😱 that is impressive and cute at the same time. the drawback is I am now feeling much older and slow...

Gerardo :psyduck:

@nixCraft We will watch their career with great interest.

Rob Bos

@nixCraft She's right, that 's' was quite lonely. Good patch.

Phillip Upton

@nixCraft @alice

Not that I need to hear the @atpfm guys complain some more about Apple’s feedback/radar system… but this definitely made me think about their conversation(s)
