There will sadly never be a better software name than Nero Burning ROM.

@antimnguyen I never thought about that... That's good 😂

Arakin

@antimnguyen I was this years old before I realised the pun in the name... 🤣

Delta Wye

@arakin @antimnguyen I was thinking “What the hell is Arakin talking about” then I realized it.

rhempel

@arakin @antimnguyen - and the connection to music is the phrase "Nero fiddled while Rome burned"

I have to admit that I did not get the joke in the Nero application name until today - which is awesome and reminds me that there is always something new and useless to know 🙂

Nazo

@antimnguyen Rofl, yes it really was one of the most apt program names I think I've ever seen. Kudos to whoever made the decision to call it that.

stonehead

@antimnguyen the joke works best in German, though, because Rome is literally spelled as Rom in that language. It's no surprise the creators were German 🙂

Elias Probst

@antimnguyen the application icon complemented it nicely…

Elias Probst

@jernej__s you're right! I was lazy and basically just used the first image search match.
@antimnguyen

el Stiko (he/him)

@antimnguyen oh.
Oh I get it now.

Also, was that program deliberately fiddly?

hazelnot :yell:

@kkarhan @antimnguyen lmao that's literally a screenshot of the Ion Cannon from C&C Tiberium Wars

hazelnot :yell:

@antimnguyen when I was a kid I thought it was pronounced "Nero Burning Room" and then I literally never thought about that name again until now when I realized it's supposed to be "Nero burning Rome".

It's been 20 years in between.

@antimnguyen
I used that product for literally years and never made that connection. 🤯
@emilygorcenski

Ingo Henning

@antimnguyen I always have to think about the software when I use these stove lighters.

ipofanes

@antimnguyen The #tidyverse people strive to invent catchy names for their packages, I like #lubridate best, which simplifies arithmetics with date and time.

zephyr :verified_paw:

@antimnguyen or having the fall of rome as your software icon

face

@antimnguyen until someone releases "Brutus v 2?"

Metalpoet :pentagram:

@antimnguyen my astronomical polar alignment program is called "poledancer".

raintrees (ancap in nw-cali)

@antimnguyen until you posted this, I had missed the pun - silly me! Thank you!

Hias aus Oliva

@antimnguyen
It was a German company. In German Rome is called "Rom". So for us it was always evident.

Florian

@antimnguyen I've know this software for I guess more than twenty years and only realized how clever the name was two or three weeks ago when talking about it with coworkers. Sure emperor Nero, but I never made the ROM / Rome connection. 😆 I felt kind of dumb for not getting it for that long.

Blort™ 🐀Ⓥ🥋☣️

@antimnguyen
I only *just*, after all these years, realized the pun that ROM in this is similar sounding to "Rome" (although I always got that Nero was famous for burning)... :blobcatsurprised:
@briankrebs

this.ven

@antimnguyen Hm... :thinking_rms: Let AUR helper search:

$ yay nero-burning-rom

:archlinux: #ArchLinux

Luke

@antimnguyen .......how did I literally never get that until just now, wow

Sparrows

@antimnguyen That's very good, and brought a smile to my face.

However, I put forward a linter program for #clojure, (file extension .clj), named Eastwood.

🥥 Tucker Carlson's Nuts 🥥

@antimnguyen
🥥 #LeisureSuitLarry wasn't a bad software name either.
Just saying. -Random Guy Named Larry 🥥

Umur

@antimnguyen
and the best acronym was for PCMCIA cards - "People Can't Memorize Computer Industry Acronyms."

Joé McKen

@antimnguyen … omfg I JUST GOT IT

I knew of that program as a kid and … I never put it together. Lol.

osmanthus

@antimnguyen and the pun literally just clicked for me. I knew about Nero and burning Rome etc. (vaguely), but I literally just made the connection between ROM and Rome 🤦

Karsten Johansson

@antimnguyen I always found installing it to be... a tad fiddly.

YEEEEEAAAAHHH!!!

Theneilcave

@antimnguyen oh my god. I used it so much and never put it together

DELETED

@antimnguyen May be true, but this looks like a self- fulfilling prophecy to me."I won't think about a brilliant name for my software because it won't be anywhere near that amount of brilliance"

iigmir

@antimnguyen The rival will be in Honnoji, I guess.

BTW there's a Taiwanese software called "非常好色". The official meaning is closed to "very fine colour". But, since the word "好色" can also means "horny", lots of folks will speak some "very horny" jokes when they mention the software.

ysbreker

@antimnguyen I must confess that right up until reading this toot I didn't get how incredibly good of a bad dadjoke this name is.

Jeff Grigg

@antimnguyen

You don't want to miss the "Burning ROM" festival!!!

vince

@antimnguyen it was *this summer* when the pun actually clicked for me--and probably only because i was listening to lectures on Roman history while ripping DVDs. 😂

just brilliant.

evenreven

@antimnguyen Speaking of CD burning, I loved the naming and icons of Roxio Toast too. The CDs inside a literal toaster is chef's kiss, and its audio CD sister application Jam has a really nice name for an audio app, especially when it's sold as Toast with Jam). Not as funny as Nero, though.

fordprefect

@antimnguyen @uedio

And it took me embarrassingly many years until I understood that joke… 🙈🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

Karel P Kerezman

@antimnguyen Someone saw their chance and grasped it with both hands.
