There will sadly never be a better software name than Nero Burning ROM.

@arakin @antimnguyen I was thinking “What the hell is Arakin talking about” then I realized it. @arakin @antimnguyen - and the connection to music is the phrase "Nero fiddled while Rome burned" I have to admit that I did not get the joke in the Nero application name until today - which is awesome and reminds me that there is always something new and useless to know 🙂 @antimnguyen Rofl, yes it really was one of the most apt program names I think I've ever seen. Kudos to whoever made the decision to call it that. @antimnguyen the joke works best in German, though, because Rome is literally spelled as Rom in that language. It's no surprise the creators were German 🙂 @jernej__s you're right! I was lazy and basically just used the first image search match. @antimnguyen I've to disappoint you... #LOIC is better! @kkarhan @antimnguyen lmao that's literally a screenshot of the Ion Cannon from C&C Tiberium Wars @antimnguyen when I was a kid I thought it was pronounced "Nero Burning Room" and then I literally never thought about that name again until now when I realized it's supposed to be "Nero burning Rome". It's been 20 years in between. @antimnguyen @jferg @antimnguyen @emilygorcenski Wait until you notice that VLC isn't an acronym at all. @FirefistGolDAce @jferg @antimnguyen @emilygorcenski Ooh, I never knew it meant Client. That makes sense though. @antimnguyen I always have to think about the software when I use these stove lighters. @antimnguyen The #tidyverse people strive to invent catchy names for their packages, I like #lubridate best, which simplifies arithmetics with date and time. @antimnguyen until you posted this, I had missed the pun - silly me! Thank you! @antimnguyen @antimnguyen I've know this software for I guess more than twenty years and only realized how clever the name was two or three weeks ago when talking about it with coworkers. Sure emperor Nero, but I never made the ROM / Rome connection. 😆 I felt kind of dumb for not getting it for that long. @antimnguyen @Blort @antimnguyen Hm... :thinking_rms: Let AUR helper search: $ yay nero-burning-rom :archlinux: #ArchLinux @antimnguyen That's very good, and brought a smile to my face. However, I put forward a linter program for #clojure, (file extension .clj), named Eastwood. @antimnguyen @antimnguyen @antimnguyen … omfg I JUST GOT IT I knew of that program as a kid and … I never put it together. Lol. @antimnguyen and the pun literally just clicked for me. I knew about Nero and burning Rome etc. (vaguely), but I literally just made the connection between ROM and Rome 🤦 @antimnguyen I always found installing it to be... a tad fiddly. (••) @antimnguyen May be true, but this looks like a self- fulfilling prophecy to me."I won't think about a brilliant name for my software because it won't be anywhere near that amount of brilliance" @antimnguyen The rival will be in Honnoji, I guess. BTW there's a Taiwanese software called "非常好色". The official meaning is closed to "very fine colour". But, since the word "好色" can also means "horny", lots of folks will speak some "very horny" jokes when they mention the software. @antimnguyen I must confess that right up until reading this toot I didn't get how incredibly good of a bad dadjoke this name is. @antimnguyen it was *this summer* when the pun actually clicked for me--and probably only because i was listening to lectures on Roman history while ripping DVDs. 😂 just brilliant. @antimnguyen Speaking of CD burning, I loved the naming and icons of Roxio Toast too. The CDs inside a literal toaster is chef's kiss, and its audio CD sister application Jam has a really nice name for an audio app, especially when it's sold as Toast with Jam). Not as funny as Nero, though. |
@antimnguyen I never thought about that... That's good 😂
