As mentioned in the design talk, we have a testing extension for the Activities button refresh.

Try it out and let us know what you think!

@tbernard I allow myself to specify: move the activities-filled-pill@verdre sub-directory, not the directory activities-filled-pill_verdre.

@tbernard Seems to work great with Gnome 42 as well, after updating the manifest.

@tbernard on a vertical layout it just makes icons disappear:

@mray This is because it doesnโ€™t work well with the extension youโ€™re using to get the vertical layout.

@tbernard By providing more information (the number of workspaces, which one is active), it is more useful than the old one for a seasoned user. Although it's more abstract, I think it should be fairly easy for a new user to relate to their workspace experiments. But where did the menu with the name of the application go? I see it as a dead loss of information without any gain in return.

@lebout2canap @tbernard I sort of agree with this too. Also, I think the dots imply it's a workspace switcher not a "here's where the activities live" button. Also also: On the activities screen the workspace switcher is vertical not horizontal so contextually it's not very uniform

@Shrigglepuss What do you mean by "vertical"? For me I consider it horizontal since GNOME 40.

@lebout2canap @tbernard oh yeah! Ignore that I just checked (I don't use workspaces often can you tell ha!)

@tbernard I like it a lot. Iโ€™ll need to give it a good shot, but I think it conveys more information at a glance, it helps position yourself on your current virtual desktops.

@tbernard ohh, neat! although i don't like how the active workspace is just a little bit bigger in height than the other dots. i think it'd look better (especially in low resolutions where the height would only be, idk, 4px bigger) if the height would be equal - but maybe it is, idk if the gif represents the animation accurately (haven't gotten to try the extension)

@tbernard I still think it's not a good idea to have the Activities button and the Apps button in complete opposite directions on the screen.
I know the Windows/Super key can be used but the way it's currently implemented in #Gnome makes it pretty much a necessity...
#Ubuntu sort of handles it a little better since the Apps button is already visible with a single press without draggin the mouse all the way from one side to another.

@tbernard That being said, I still find #Gnome the most comfortable desktop environment on #Linux so I'm by no means a "hater" ๐Ÿ˜Š :gnomewhite:

@tbernard I am missing workspace names, similar to what space-bar gnome extension does. The problem if you don't have workspace names is that it's hard to remember which workspace you put something on. It's a minor thing that would make workspaces much more useful ๐Ÿ™ extensions.gnome.org/extension

@tbernard I like that you are replacing "Activities", but I donโ€™t like the design. I find it to abstract.
On the right you have small icons which are really easy to read (battery, volume, wifi), this pile however is not very descriptive and if you have only two virtual desktops it looks a bit strange.

If you are in the middle of a greater number of workspaces it is more understandable.

This pile should be replaced by an icon showing a desktop IMO.
