Ever since I added dark mode to the @pixelfed app, the light mode just doesn’t look right.

I’d love to get basic statistics on stuff like this to get a better idea of how people are using the app and what I should focus on, but only if it’s privacy friendly and anonymous.

Will think more about this and organize a community vote if I want to move forward. The final decision I’ll leave to the community, the stats aren’t worth losing your trust!

@dansup @pixelfed makes me think of how a neutral middle gray is often helpful for image and color software. So a third choice might be warranted?

@dansup @pixelfed Auto dark/light mode would be nice 👀

@dansup @pixelfed I edit and view my photos in programs that use mid-grey or darker backgrounds. My shots often look a little underexposed when I upload them to Pixelfed and ironically, to my eyes, look better when uploaded to Mastodon with its default #2d3039 background. It would be great to be able to set a dark background not only for one's own feed, but for visitors to the feed as well. Just as a default mind, if visitors want to override it, that should be their prerogative, of course.

@dansup @pixelfed I am a big light mode proponent! I find light coloured text on a dark background far more straining to read. Some research suggests that astigmatism (which I have) can play a part - vice.com/en/article/ywyqxw/app , medium.com/@h_locke/why-dark-m

I prefer dark mode on any app for two reasons.

Easier on my eyes, but also that it saves battery where needed.

@dansup @pixelfed Maybe this tool can help creating little Surveys like your question? formbricks.com/

@dansup @pixelfed I think statistics are ok if you just make them opt-in and public. When you offer people to share their anonymous usage info you also link to some public site where everybody can see this.

Just another rakyat 🇲🇾

@dansup @pixelfed My phone switches automatically between light and dark mode depending on the time of the day, so it’ll be nice if the app theme follows the system default.

@rakyat @pixelfed I'd like to support that, though I think that would require some custom swift/kotlin logic. I'll look into this!
