Mocking Google for their totally-not-an-attempt-to-DRM-the-Web is the right thing to do. Open issues on the proposal repo and let them know what you think. Politely. But, don't be fooled. Even if they take this back, it doesn't change how they think. This is their intention. They just failed to slip it by this time. The answer is to take power away from Google. Stop using their stuff. Build alternatives. It's not easy, but it's the only way. And mock them. That's always fun. 23 comments

Politely? Why? They give 2 entire shits about what we think. If nothing else, tearing into them would be cathartic, which is more than I'll get just asking nicely, because, again, they give 2 entire shits about what we think.

@TheDailyBurble Good question. The names i see most often are protonmail and fastmail. Not sure what other options are available and how good they are.

@TheDailyBurble @chrisg I've used @Tutanota for email for 3 years now. No regrets, no issues, no problems with signing up for services. They have a free tier you can try, but I'm a happily paying customer.

@TheDailyBurble @chrisg Anecdotal, but Iβve been using Protonmail for almost exactly 5 years and have had maybe one time where a site didnβt like it.

@TheDailyBurble @chrisg Alone, it could get expensive. If you know a few others willing to help split a bill, it is the best. I'm lucky enough to have a parent with a business that also needs a website and email. As such, I self host with a static IP.

@chrisg the most immediate way to take power away from Google is to agitate hard for governments to enforce anti-competition laws, which Google runs afoul of on a regular basis across the world. we can't "out software" them, and shouldn't try. i'm not here to waste another couple decades writing #foss that's only going to end up being training data for the next generation of Microsoft GitHub Copilot. these companies need to be stopped from doing this crap, not handed our hard work free of charge.

As long as you buy and use a company's products they really don't care what you think. There has been a shift with corporations and politicians. You can't shame them, they don't care if you hate them. If you do business with a company that is all the approval they need, you're paying them to do what they do. |
