@john that discussion is nearly as old as the project itself.😊
Yes, I could have named it #MastoDOS.
No, I didn’t think of it when I started.
Yes, MastoDOS is hilarious
But no, I still like #DOStodon more.

If I ever decide to port DOStodon from JavaScript to pure C I will surely use MastoDOS 🤣

Death by Lambda

@dec_hl @john
You realise you've just killed #Mastodon, if not the #Fediverse - you do know that right?

We'll never go #mainstream now.

Not even if #Obama started tooting, or even #MrRogers

Pig On The Wing 🐖

@dec_hl @john wait, do you mean you are running JAVASCRIPT on a Toshiba libretto??? What is it a pentium 100? That's unbelievable

SuperIlu

@enicon @john yep, and it is not even a JIT but an interpreter.

marceles 🌴🌴

@dec_hl that mastodon client is full of cool people, i just know that!

Jonathan Lamothe
@dec_hl displaying photos in a TUI app is witchcraft.
Kate Watson

@dec_hl The trouble with some of the stuff on here is it takes a few moments to decide fi these sorts of post are real or not 🤣

SuperIlu

@antinomy I can assure you, that project (and the one it is based on) eating my free time for month is very real 🤣

Kate Watson

@dec_hl Looks like awesome work. Congratulations! ☺️

Pfannkuchen :unverified:

@dec_hl We truly live in an age of wonders ! (no, i didn't steal that sentence)

DesRoin :fullstacklive:

@dec_hl now I do wonder if it's possible to make this work under DOSbox 😅

SuperIlu

@DesRoin It was mostly developed using @DOSBox_Staging and the "getting started" instructions are for DBS.

Will

@dec_hl@mastodon.social man, as a kid, I wanted one of those so bad. hahaha.

Keyboard :Blobhaj: :clippy:

that’s actually pretty cool! I love this idea!

Boris Kretzinger

@dec_hl Guess I'll need a PCMCIA network card to enjoy DOStodon on my laptop then.

SuperIlu

@nus this is Toshibas twisted idea of a mouse replacement. This "thing" is like the red mouse nipples on a thinkpad, the mouse buttons are on the back of the lid...

DELETED

@dec_hl They put the mouse parts on the flimsy side of the laptop... Well okay. I guess there's only so much real estate to go around, back during when the screen was so tiny... But still!

SuperIlu

@nus well, for s thing so ancient and tiny it is still a well made machine...

PB Livin'

@nus @dec_hl I guess they were still in the process of figuring out what makes good design... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

DELETED

@wh0sthatd0g @dec_hl
At least they made you have to grip the entire top of the laptop, you're not just pushing on something. Still seems like a bad idea, but I guess they were taking advantage of something that would otherwise be an empty plastic shell, right?

DELETED

@wh0sthatd0g @dec_hl
If this had a 16:9 screen ratio, it might have been less of a problem. Or at least the answer would have been more apparent. Just check out how wide that dang keyboard is. Looks beautiful. I love where they put the windows key.

Colin H.

@dec_hl @nus I'm pretty sure that species of bacteria currently unknown to man will be living on that mousenip.

SuperIlu

@GlasWolf @nus maybe I gain super powers by licking it? 🦸‍♀️

Meredith

@dec_hl This is brilliant, I have no use for it but I love the concept, well done.

SuperIlu

@nanoelquant Tested it on MS-DOS, FreeDOS, Win9x and several flavors of DOSBox

CrudMan

@dec_hl Big win for Fallout 3 Terminal Enjoyers

DELETED

@dec_hl

Oh finally! I've been waiting for this for, err, minutes! (Is there any hardware among my stuff which is old enough? I am curious nevertheless.)

Michael R.

@dec_hl Something about the Libretto makes my heart thump

spooky blip 👻

@dec_hl seeing this machine, I now see exactly where @mntmn got their inspiration for Pocket Reform :flan_laugh:

nhordic

@dec_hl that thing looks like you could hack a Gibson with it.

Kris Samsel

@dec_hl Have a 1998 Panasonic Toughbook. Win 98 on it. Play old games on it. Blood. Duke Nukem. Etc… Still kickin’. 32 megs of RAM. 200 mb hd! 🤞🏼

Andreas Sebayang

@dannotdaniel @dec_hl This brings up a lot of really bad memories. :D I should still have an archive of my Autoexec.bat "boot menu" on a MO-Disk somewhere. ;)

SuperIlu

@dannotdaniel Also: This should be HTTP error 502: BAT gateway 😂

ᴚ uɐᗡ

@dec_hl I am so confused right now - it's JavaScript but it requires DOS? Like, it is not a DOS emulator? AAAhhh I just wanna know if I can run DOStodon on Linux aaahh

SuperIlu

@dannotdaniel #DOStodon is based on #DOjS, another project of mine.
#DOjS is a #Javascript based #CreativeCoding IDE for #MSDOS. So basically a Javascript language runtime without a browser (e.g. like #NodeJS).

So I used #DOjS to implement a #MastodonClient in #Javascript 😊

If you get @DOSBox_Staging for #Linux you can use the supplied config file on GitHub and you can run #DOStodon in #DOSBox

SuperIlu

@dannotdaniel

Thus going:
Linux->DOSBox->DOjS->DOStodon 🤣

Alexander Shendi

@dec_hl @dannotdaniel

What's wrong with my Expanded Memory Manager (EMM)??!

ᴚ uɐᗡ

@alexshendi @dec_hl that was the free one us Gucci DOS folk had QEMM86 or something.

That shit worked too I had like over 620k conventional RAM.

And Wing Commander was pleased.

Weasel

@dec_hl This is really cool! I'd have to figure out how to set up a packet driver within Win98SE though, since I've been using a PCMCIA wireless card to connect to the internet, and it doesn't have DOS drivers. 😓

SuperIlu

@wildweasel yeah, getting PCMCIA cards to run can be a PITA. Only one out of five different brands/types I own works on the Libretto 😩

P. S. F.

@dec_hl 😍

I have to try #DOStodon on my old Portégé 300ct.

I might also try it on an old 486 laptop, but with just 4 MBs of RAM I don't know if it'll even work.

SuperIlu

@prsfalken Nope, 4MiB is way to low. I think the lowest that was tested were 9MiB...

P. S. F.

@dec_hl Ouch 😩

Well, it really was very hard to run anything beyond Arachne and Win 3.11.

Tarren (They/Them)

@lisamelton @dec_hl Wow...there's people who actually go on line with those old things? That's gotta be quite the feat!

DELETED

@dec_hl god thos is awesome! Brings back good memories🫶🏼

Lufty Foxyloon

@dec_hl This seems like a good excuse to dig out the ol' Pentium machine I have laying around. :blobfoxlaugh:

Inky :verified_trans:

@dec_hl I know this is a serious post announcing DOStodon on the official app page, (Gonna save this post for if I ever get a retro system)

But my dumb bitch brain is so focused on how much this looks like a big Nintendo DS
(I love it.)

SuperIlu

@inky_skink_art it kinda does and it is the only Nintendo able to run the original DOOM 🤣

Lara

@dec_hl Oh no, that looks so cute! 😂🧡

_TheÂnimator_

@dec_hl yoooo let's gooo, dude _ this is so fuckin' cool

DELETED

@dec_hl Hmm..in theory worldvu could do dos text console ui's in pure C, and may still work with older dos C compilers (originally it was in K&R and used on QNX). That could lead to term apps that work on both old dos and on unix systems as well.

SuperIlu

@tychosoft as far as I know there already is a term based mastodon client for Unix.
And the most demanding „feature“ in writing a client is not the GUI, but to get modern HTTPS working on annoys platform…

Brian Dear

@dec_hl Someone ought to do a PLATOdon, written in the TUTOR language, with the text appearing in the friendly orange glow of PLATO. It'd suck, of course, because there's no scrolling in TUTOR.

ℵ0

makes me think I should invest in a DOS computer(sooner than I was already planning to).

Mo Ⓐ☭🇵🇸

@dec_hl congratulations. This is total insanity to me

AJ

@dec_hl Retrodon!! What a cool and beautiful project!! I love waking up to this kind of stuff! :)

SuperIlu

@objectinspace more like 32MiB, but yes, the lower 640KiB are needed as well 😁

bgtlover

@dec_hl OK, that's truely awesome, nothing else to say.

SuperIlu

@Lightrider depends on the API, I don’t know if this is compatible
