Mastodon went from 1.2M active users last week to 1.8M active users this week. That's not 70M users overnight, but it's something! πŸ™‚

@Gargron Sick little party going on here. TY.

Jacob Schumer

@Gargron and those 1.8m will soon be able to follow any of those 70m (hopefully)

@Heliograph @matunos @jacobschumer @Gargron
Because there are some good people joining up with interesting things to say but....
No doubt Million of dickheads too, who are not well moderated, so they will be defederated.

Michael Gemar

@Gargron And it's not really a contest, since here there are no investors or advertisers to please with huge continual growth.

Larry Anderson

@Gargron It's not quantity, but quality that matters. πŸ˜‰

Airpods69

@Gargron Ayee its progress! If people can join and leave freely then its a better platform than being chained to one

space scientist tikistitch

@Gargron

And not a single Kardashian among them, which is one of the things I appreciate about this place. ❀️

Robin

and that SEVENTY MILLION ACCOUNTS are entering the fediverse @Gargron

Robin

@bbak @Gargron well, it’s coming. Others are speculating that the Threads server will be so large that if it does merge with the fediverse it will break it

goNgaN

@Gargron

I'm sending you a song of brotherhood in my own language. The story of two fishermen, Greek and Turkish.
This is how universal culture will be established.

@gongan @Gargron
I am greek, I had never heard of this song. It's really good.

Muz

@Gargron everyone wants a piece of mastodon. crawling to it like a pack of rats. it'd be enough make you sick if not for the truth that they deserve to be force-fed short form text posts. theyre that type of people

rastilin

@Muzza @Gargron

I get 3000 characters on this server. I love the energy though, however un-directed.

Muz

@rastilin @Gargron you couldn't pay me enough to read or write that much in a single post

johanna, at the cafe counter

@Gargron look, 1.8 million or 1.2 million even is enough to keep the species alive after the 70 million just mutually annihilate. We’re good. 🀣

Aday

@Gargron quality, not quantity! I love the quality of interactions here and people’s attitude. Keep up the good work and congratulations! πŸŽ‰

BeAware :fediverse:

@Gargron well, when you can only sign in with an account from a service that's been a mainstay in social media for 15 years, that's what happens. They cheated, I refuse to make an #instagram account because its just not what I'm looking for. I wanted to try out #Threads, but couldn't because of this crappy decision.

Pippi & ObiJuan the RV Pups

@BeAware @Gargron You're not missing anything but a bunch of people already begging for followers. I love it here.

BeAware :fediverse:

@TinCanWin @Gargron oh I wasn't wanting to stay there or anything, just wanted to see the chaos. Morbid curiosity :kek:

Sector9

@BeAware @Gargron
Sometimes people hand deliver you the biohazard warning. And we should thank them for keeping us safe from them.
#meta is cancer.

San JosΓ© de CΓΊcuta

@Gargron Pretty soon Mark Zuckerberg is going to say he wants to buy Mastodon, just like the way he did with Instagram.

kkeller

@cucuta @Gargron of course that is exactly why ActivityPub instances are federated

Futaba

@cucuta @Gargron
Yes, the relationship between Meta and Mastodon reminds me of Microsoft and Linux in the late '90s-mid 00s.

Wendell Bell

@Gargron You and Mark can both thank Elon.

Romolo Sorrentino

@Gargron less people on ΜΆPΜΆaΜΆrΜΆlΜΆeΜΆrΜΆ I mean Twitter is always good for the world.

Dennis Jernberg

@Gargron That's just 70M users signed up. I'm sure a *very* low percentage of those signed up will stay active after the initial sugar rush, especially once the non-celebrities/influencers discover how invisible they are there (it's worse in that respect than Twitter ever was).

It's just plain better here in the Fediverse.

Cameron

@dennis_jernberg @Gargron I only signed up, using a discarded Instagram account, to see what it was like. I've already stopped using it so that makes it 69,999,999 😁

Kristoffer Lawson

@Gargron and that’s just the actives. Way more have registered (over 13M, if @mastodonusercount can be trusted). Not all of those 70M will remain active there.

Mark W

@Gargron For a network that isn’t being actively promoted by billionaires, this isn’t bad. Thank you for all your hard work.

Hans van Zijst
@Eugen Rochko Wow, that's a 50% increase, that's very nice indeed!
Tim Chambers

@Gargron Fediverse hive mind: Check my tired-brain main: a 50% increase?

realcaseyrollins

@tchambers @Gargron Holy frick how did I miss this, you’re right

kolya

@tchambers
1.2 / 2 = 0.6 (50%)
1.2 + 0.6 = 1.8

ren πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ (a they/them)

@tchambers @Gargron Honestly. At the end of the day, if we ended up here at 5-10 million active users having great convos with real humans (not brands, celebrities , and wanna-be influencers) and that was where we capped out?

I’d be down…

slade πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

@Gargron I feel like Threads and Mastodon have two different targets in a way. Remember that their goal is to integrate with everyone through ActivityPub, so we all win in the end.

And be proud of the work y'all are doing, too!

adwaita

@Gargron I don't need 70M users to have fun in Fediverse.

Hugh Ferguson

@Gargron let's not forget that Thread's meteoric rise in the "ratings" was partially due to everyone on Instagram automagically having an account on Threads which counted to the "total"

mr_froggyπŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦οΈ

@hfinyow @Gargron I thought of looking at Threads, but I'd need an Instagram account. The "fine print" says that to delete a Threads account, the person's Instagram account needs to be deleted too.
Maybe not such a good idea after all?

glyn

@hfinyow Then why isn't Threads claiming far more than 70M people have signed up?

Hugh Ferguson

@underlap probably because any more would not be plausible. Remember, it's all about the marketing.

DELETED

@Gargron

Agreed. I’ve been on Facebook, twitter and TikTok. Gave them all up because of the nastiness that I didn’t need in my head.

Mastodon is the one for me. The number of users isn’t a measurement of quality.

Clara Listensprechen
@Gargron Well let's see. Twitter wanted to get rid of bots. Masto's got useful bots. Meta? Betcha they're getting Gucifer 3.0 bots.
Landor Dragen

@Gargron slow and steady wins the race. Except this isn’t a race, and we are way better here at the stands.

Black Chic with the Red Truck

@Iandordragen @Gargron
I really sort of hate how this has been made into a competition. It shouldn’t be. Mastodon shouldn’t be compared to Threads and come up the loser. They’re not even really playing the same game. It’s a false narrative.

Awassi is Sheep

@Gargron the best part? The people who joined aren't all tech nuts and programmers so I'm smart enough to understand them

Collin Donnell

@Gargron Serious question β€” is growth a priority or just a nice thing if it happens? I could see arguments for Mastodon ever achieving any kind of mainstream popularity being a non-goal.

joemug

@Gargron
"Subscribe to tags."
Everyone: OOooooooh

kolya

@Gargron There's a lot of ways Mastodon needs to get easier and more polished, eg a DHT to find user addresses. But I'll rather have this raw diamond than be a pawn in Zucc's grace.

padraigd

@Gargron I think sustained organic growth is the best way.

Tony Richardson

@Gargron
I think #Mastodon will be a game changer once the #Fediverse is recognised as the way fwd in social media and other apps such as #Threads adopt the #ActivityPub protocol. Silo apps such as #Twitter will die a slow death.

skribe πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ :verified_mustard:

@Gargron it's not about the population, it's about the conversations.

@Gargron nice i getting my NOC team on here also since i am the only linux chad they know lol
#mastodon #linux

RussianDeepStateSock

@Gargron yay and you can't wait to sell out a significant % of those new users to Facebook and/or the next for-profit nightmare corporation that comes along and offers you cash and NDRs.

How fortunate we are!

Andres Jalinton

@Gargron
It wouldn't work if those would be 70M anyways πŸ˜†

SRG24

@Gargron we don’t have to be the town square. A cool corner coffee shop for grown folks works just fine

Diego 🌲

@Gargron is this on all instances or just for mastodon.social?

Earthling

@Gargron

Congratulation Eugen!
Thank you for your pioneering work.

For me, being on Mastodon feels like relaxing in an anti-capitalist resort.
Here I can recuperate my mind communicating with like-minded people and then go back to face our confused society again.
I love it here and I don't care about THREADS as long as they do not attack our resort.
😘 πŸ™

Arthur Liu

@Gargron I signed up for Threads, and doing so prompted me to finally stop procrastinating on trying out Mastodon, too. Doesn't hurt to try different things to see what sticks.

DELETED

@Gargron most of those new mastodon users are unlikely to be brands or influencers which is all that threads seems to be right now. I’ll stay here.

Stu

@Gargron Slow and steady [s]wins the race[/s] lets the instances scale.

John Jordan

@Gargron it’s definitely something great! I was never on twitter, but I believe in the fediverse, so I wanted to be here!

Jeffrey Phillips

@Gargron That's what you get when you enable quote-post functionality!

ˈdΓ€lfΙ™nβ„’πŸ¬ πŸ’₯ 🌊

@Gargron That’s fantastic πŸ‘πŸ₯³
And it’s not manipulating the user base from another platform to gain/ keep members!

ˈdΓ€lfΙ™nβ„’πŸ¬ πŸ’₯ 🌊

@Gargron A 50% increase in a week is wonderful!
And the community here is fantastic πŸ₯°

jadeabliss

@Gargron those others had a huge head start. this is building from scratch. And we love it 🌻πŸ₯°

Andrew C. White

@Gargron 50% increase is nothing to sneeze at. Good job!

Dread_Pirate_Roberts

@Gargron Gut gemacht, Mann!

Ich mΓΆchte Teil Ihres Teams sein.

Chris Copeland

@Gargron

I’ve learned so much more than I could have on other platforms already. So happy to have learned about fediverse and Mastadon.

RowinSpeez

@Gargron Mastodon has a built in user base of 0 basically so that’s a total gain of 1.6M, Instagram has a built-in user base of like 800M, so Threads has 730 Million people who aren’t on it yet. So if you think about it one way, more people will choose not to use Threads than will choose to join Mastodon.

If my math checks out that’s a good thing.

Daniel NΓΊΓ±ez

@Gargron is a good thing.

In your blog you wrote a really sensitive post about Threads and Mastodon.

I want to keep the positivism, and I hope that the user base will become part of the Fediverse and perhaps, even if it is just a fraction, will move to Mastodon and similar options.

Jamie Clark

@Gargron
cc @jerry Congratulations. Mastodon continues to accomplish this growth in an organic and noncoercive way:

β€’ without borrowing any other social graphs or your personal data without permission;

β€’ without locking users into accounts, by threatening to delete their other social contacts if they leave this one;

β€’ with truly decentralized systems, and a notable absence of dependencies on techbro billionaire controllers.

So hey that seems like a win.

'Slow and steady wins the race" last time I heard :ablobcatheartsqueeze:

Ian Applebaum

@Gargron I know I’ve asked this before and I’m not questioning the number, but how do you count active users since Mastodon is decentralized?

Meowie Gamer

@Gargron that is a lot. Is the bird app dying yet again

Evgeny Lepekhin

@Gargron it's definitely a sign that more and more people want to have a just and welcoming space for sharing ideas without being intoxicated with FOMO of social media.

Rich Felker

@Gargron It's 0.6M real users instead of 70M fake ones.

Hwa

@Gargron just got a new user πŸ™ŒπŸ™Œ

Benjamin Eunice

@Gargron I would much rather this slow, effective growth that is creating a good community rather than a rapid explosion of growth that is resulting in a very asinine feed from what I've heard.

DELETED

@Gargron I guess another thing, is keeping 70M users is a lot harder of a problem for a single actor. Lets see how it plays out.

WanderingPoltergeist

@Gargron That's what I prefer sustainable, incremental growth of decentralized social media. The primary goal for the Fediverse is to create a space where people can talk and share their interests without algorithms getting in the way. We aren't here to make those corpo's rich AF...We want the community that helps tie people together and get them talking.

Brar Piening

@Gargron also, quantity of users is only a weak surrogate for success. More and more media channels, companies and interesting/productive individual accounts show up, wich is ways more important to me than numbers.

D. Smithee

@Gargron 70 million new users probably would've broken a few things.

Enola Knezevic

@Gargron I don't think Meta gained 70M users. Sure most were on Instagram already.

DELETED

@Gargron I wish people were flocking to Mastodon instead of Threads, honestly, but at least people are flocking to Lemmy and kbin after Reddit decided to shoot themselves in the foot.

Norman

@Gargron awesome to #Mastodon it growing! Thanks for all your awesome work.

Jack Yan (η”„ηˆ΅ζ©)

@Gargron Of that 70 million, many will have popped by to look, or to grab their username, and immediately became inactive.
