Mastodon went from 1.2M active users last week to 1.8M active users this week. That's not 70M users overnight, but it's something! π

@Heliograph @matunos @jacobschumer @Gargron @matunos @jacobschumer @Gargron @Gargron And it's not really a contest, since here there are no investors or advertisers to please with huge continual growth. And not a single Kardashian among them, which is one of the things I appreciate about this place. β€οΈ I'm sending you a song of brotherhood in my own language. The story of two fishermen, Greek and Turkish. @Gargron look, 1.8 million or 1.2 million even is enough to keep the species alive after the 70 million just mutually annihilate. Weβre good. π€£ @Gargron well, when you can only sign in with an account from a service that's been a mainstay in social media for 15 years, that's what happens. They cheated, I refuse to make an #instagram account because its just not what I'm looking for. I wanted to try out #Threads, but couldn't because of this crappy decision. @TinCanWin @Gargron oh I wasn't wanting to stay there or anything, just wanted to see the chaos. Morbid curiosity :kek: @Gargron Pretty soon Mark Zuckerberg is going to say he wants to buy Mastodon, just like the way he did with Instagram. @Gargron less people on ΜΆPΜΆaΜΆrΜΆlΜΆeΜΆrΜΆ I mean Twitter is always good for the world. @Gargron That's just 70M users signed up. I'm sure a *very* low percentage of those signed up will stay active after the initial sugar rush, especially once the non-celebrities/influencers discover how invisible they are there (it's worse in that respect than Twitter ever was). It's just plain better here in the Fediverse. @dennis_jernberg @Gargron I only signed up, using a discarded Instagram account, to see what it was like. I've already stopped using it so that makes it 69,999,999 π @dennis_jernberg @Gargron my highly detailed review https://mastodon.world/@bitflipped/110675422933661512 @Gargron and thatβs just the actives. Way more have registered (over 13M, if @mastodonusercount can be trusted). Not all of those 70M will remain active there. @tchambers @Gargron Honestly. At the end of the day, if we ended up here at 5-10 million active users having great convos with real humans (not brands, celebrities , and wanna-be influencers) and that was where we capped out? Iβd be downβ¦ @Gargron I feel like Threads and Mastodon have two different targets in a way. Remember that their goal is to integrate with everyone through ActivityPub, so we all win in the end. And be proud of the work y'all are doing, too! @Gargron let's not forget that Thread's meteoric rise in the "ratings" was partially due to everyone on Instagram automagically having an account on Threads which counted to the "total" @underlap probably because any more would not be plausible. Remember, it's all about the marketing. Agreed. Iβve been on Facebook, twitter and TikTok. Gave them all up because of the nastiness that I didnβt need in my head. Mastodon is the one for me. The number of users isnβt a measurement of quality. @Gargron Well let's see. Twitter wanted to get rid of bots. Masto's got useful bots. Meta? Betcha they're getting Gucifer 3.0 bots.
@Gargron slow and steady wins the race. Except this isnβt a race, and we are way better here at the stands. @Iandordragen @Gargron @Gargron the best part? The people who joined aren't all tech nuts and programmers so I'm smart enough to understand them @Gargron Serious question β is growth a priority or just a nice thing if it happens? I could see arguments for Mastodon ever achieving any kind of mainstream popularity being a non-goal. @Gargron @Gargron it's not about the population, it's about the conversations. @Gargron yay and you can't wait to sell out a significant % of those new users to Facebook and/or the next for-profit nightmare corporation that comes along and offers you cash and NDRs. How fortunate we are! Congratulation Eugen! For me, being on Mastodon feels like relaxing in an anti-capitalist resort. @Gargron I signed up for Threads, and doing so prompted me to finally stop procrastinating on trying out Mastodon, too. Doesn't hurt to try different things to see what sticks. @Gargron itβs definitely something great! I was never on twitter, but I believe in the fediverse, so I wanted to be here! @Gargron Thatβs fantastic ππ₯³ @Gargron A 50% increase in a week is wonderful! @Gargron those others had a huge head start. this is building from scratch. And we love it π»π₯° Iβve learned so much more than I could have on other platforms already. So happy to have learned about fediverse and Mastadon. @Gargron Mastodon has a built in user base of 0 basically so thatβs a total gain of 1.6M, Instagram has a built-in user base of like 800M, so Threads has 730 Million people who arenβt on it yet. So if you think about it one way, more people will choose not to use Threads than will choose to join Mastodon. If my math checks out thatβs a good thing. @Gargron is a good thing. In your blog you wrote a really sensitive post about Threads and Mastodon. I want to keep the positivism, and I hope that the user base will become part of the Fediverse and perhaps, even if it is just a fraction, will move to Mastodon and similar options. @Gargron @Gargron I know Iβve asked this before and Iβm not questioning the number, but how do you count active users since Mastodon is decentralized? @Gargron it's definitely a sign that more and more people want to have a just and welcoming space for sharing ideas without being intoxicated with FOMO of social media. @Gargron I would much rather this slow, effective growth that is creating a good community rather than a rapid explosion of growth that is resulting in a very asinine feed from what I've heard. @Gargron That's what I prefer sustainable, incremental growth of decentralized social media. The primary goal for the Fediverse is to create a space where people can talk and share their interests without algorithms getting in the way. We aren't here to make those corpo's rich AF...We want the community that helps tie people together and get them talking. @Gargron also, quantity of users is only a weak surrogate for success. More and more media channels, companies and interesting/productive individual accounts show up, wich is ways more important to me than numbers. @Gargron Of that 70 million, many will have popped by to look, or to grab their username, and immediately became inactive. |
@Gargron Sick little party going on here. TY.
