A year ago if you told me that Instagram would be joining the fediverse, I'd think your crazy.

Let's not forget why they are doing this though, thanks to EU laws they have to make data portable, and with federation support they can portray their monopolistic practices in a different light.

Meta is an advertising company, we are their next market to break into. Remember this.

@dansup I was honestly expecting Tumblr to beat them to the ActivityPub punch, goes to show how big of an opportunity they're seeing after Twitter's decisions.

@dansup that's exactly why I am worried when the language used to describe it is "Instagram is joining the fediverse."

Don't get me wrong, I am not trying to make a personal jab at you here. It is easiest to use this language in this context. And so it is used.

The problem I have with that is that it assumes what Fediverse is. And I don't think Fediverse is defined solely by the protocol. There are shared values, as nebulous as they are, which are at the core here. And Meta won't espouse them.

@dansup okay I'm going out on a limb here, but I think the Fediverse has the tools to deal with commercial participants, and as more people join the Fediverse, more people will drift over to the non-commercial destinations. This is a Good Thing.

dansup

@Tipa It's a good thing to have all these new people in the fediverse yes, but what I meant is that this wasn't some kind gesture on their part, they will accumulate data from non-threads users.

Tipa

@dansup with difficulty. the distributed nature of the Fediverse is going to make it harder to identify and collate people.

dansup

@Tipa True, we'll have to wait and see how it goes before jumping to conclusions!

@dansup -Again, the metaverse isn't working out so hot for them so they'll strip-mine The Fediverse where and when they can for more content and shadow profiles. They certainly aren't doing it for some greater good (that isn't their bottom line).

@dansup Funny enough they're not launching Threads in the EU - probably *because of* those EU laws.
And yet, joining the fediverse means it will be hard for them to lock out EU citizens sooo... fun times ahead.

@dansup I mean threads won't be launched in europe in foreseeable future, so um, idk how much that relates to europe really

mroszko

@dansup Nah, I think they aren't doing it due to EU laws about data portability.

I think they want fediverse content to seed their site to lure in their users rather than expecting their users to post anything meaningful from the get go.

estarriol

@dansup meta, holds its users as the product to sell on.

And hates anyone else getting that cash, and are not a.one.

@dansup So, the best thing to do would be for everyone to ignore them and/or block them?
